IPL-like competition for racing
By Nic Ashman
An international event, modelled along the lines of the Indian Premier League, is set to hit racing in 2013.
The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) announced a concept where sponsors will bid for jockeys, who will then compete in a series of international horse races.
The idea is to hold 12 races in as many cities across the world, with 12 internationally known jockeys participating in each to earn points.
"Patterned along the lines of the Indian Premier League, this is a new movement in the world of horse racing. We hope to host one of the races in Mumbai as early as 2013,” RWITC chairman, Vivek Jain said.
"Sponsors will bid for jockeys, just like they bid for players in IPL teams.”
The RWITC participated in the Asian Racing Conference held in Turkey to showcase Indian racing.
