Mumbai : The issue of possible strangles cases at the Royal Western India Turf Club took a new turn on Sunday when the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) put up a notice, saying it will not allow horses from Mumbai to enter its premises until further notice. Strangles is an infectious, contagious disease of equidae, characterized by abscessation of the lymphoid tissue of the upper respiratory tract.
On Saturday, the Chief Vet at RWITC, Dr. S K Kulkarni, had said that there is not a single case of Strangles in their premises. According to a source, BTC has asked Dr. Rajashekar, Technical Director, Diagnostic Research Laboratory of RWITC (Pune), to submit a report to BTC after thorough investigation of horses for any infectious disease. BTC will act on his report.
“A few cases of strangles were reported at Amateur Riders’ Club (ARC), but none at RWITC. I believe these horses were removed. I guess BTC notice is only precautionary, and would be lifted once it is established that there is no scare”, said RWITC Chairman, Vivek Jain. Horses from all racing centres travel to Bangalore for the summer season. This season, the summer season starts on May 12.
