RWITC to withdraw writ against Army

Mumbai : The Managing Committee of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) on Sunday decided to withdraw the writ filed against Army unconditionally, paving way for the process to reach an amicable solution over the dispute concerning the Pune Race Course land as directed by the Mumbai High Court.

“Following the meeting between our two committee members, Khushroo Dhunjibhoy and Champaklal Zaveri, with Army officials on Saturday, we have decided to withdraw the writ unconditionally,” said RWITC, Chairman Vivek Jain.  “It was felt cooperation was better than confrontation especially when the local military authority reiterated their intent and desire to respect the spirit of the 1907 lease.  A diplomatic solution keeping the best interests of the Club and sport was clearly preferred to a long-drawn legal wrangle,” Jain added.

Following this decision, the hearing over the admission of the RWITC’s writ against the Army, scheduled for Monday, appears a mere formality.  “I’m sure the Army will respect the 1907 lease and allow uninterrupted and hindrance-free running of the sport, which is our prime objective,” said Jain who has been advocating talks with Army as the best way forward.
