RWITC decides to withdraw writ petition

BRINGING THE curtains down on the acrimonious row over the usage of the Pune racecourse land for now, the managing committee of the Royal Western India Turf Club has decided to withdraw the writ petition it had filed in the Bombay High Court against the Union of India, the Principal Director (Defence Estates, Southern Command, Pune), Defence Estate Officer (Pune Circle) and the Local Military Authority (LMA) (Headquarters, Pune Sub-Area) in December last.

An emergency meeting of the RWITC’s managing committee was held during the races last evening where it was unanimously decided to withdraw the petition.

Informing Mirror of this development RWITC chairman Vivek Jain said, “Arising out of the meeting held between the LMA and committee members KN Dhunjibhoy and Champaklal Zaveri on Saturday during which it was decided between the two parties that the lease deed of 1907 and the MoU of 2000 will be upheld in letter and spirit, the committee has unanimously decided to withdraw the writ petition. The army has assured that once the writ petition is withdrawn, they would not hinder horse-racing activities at the Pune racecourse in any manner.”

When asked whether, in hindsight, he believed that the club’s decision to file the writ petition was wrong in the first place, Jain replied, “Yes, we took the decision to file the writ last August but it was done only after consulting our legal advisors.”
