Two sterling Grammy Award winning musicians Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt & Toumani Diabate wow the crowds at RWITC
The rhythms of Africa and Hindustani classical come together
The Royal Western India Turf Club(RWITC) played the perfect host last evening to a mesmerising collaborative performance by two sterling Grammy Award winning musicians in Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Toumani Diabate at a benefit concert for HIV/AIDS with UNAIDS and ICCR (Govt of India), supported by Tribe@Turf, a RWITC Community Initiative and Indigo Live.
Panditji on his Mohan Veena and Diabate on his Kora presented a unique and virtuous evening of 2 Grammy Award maestros coming together and playing their proprietary art for the first time ever in India. They sent the enthusiastic audience into raptures with their superb renditions and admirable endeavour at seamless artistic fusion. Panditji had won the prestigious Grammy award in 1993 for his album "A Meeting to Remember" on which he had collaborated with Diabate and more than 25 years hence, they reproduced the very same performance much to the vociferous delight of those listening. The air was abuzz with excitement, scintillating music and loud applause that rang out throughout the entire evening.
This evening brought two diverse yet interconnected musical influences together and the end result was a variety of music from African melodies and rhythms to Hindustani Ragas to a fusion of blues, flamenco, world sounds accompanied by the potent Indian percussions(Tabla). The main act featured the Grammy Award winners and the rhythms of Africa and Hindustani classical fused to bring about a very unique sound.
Clearly, these two musical maestros wowed the crowds and how! It was a virtuoso performance indeed that left the audience yearning for more. An enchanting evening with the crowds having just one grouse - they didn't want the show to end! And understandably so!
Plenty of well known faces in the audience some of whom included Devika and Suresh Bhojwani, Mukul Deora, Gautam Kapoor, Lesle Lewis, Raju and Esther Daswani, Actors Ameet Gaur and Shreya Narayan, Jeanne Salim Merchant, Ashvin Gidwani, Gary Lawyer, Beenu Bawa and others.
From the Committee Mr and Mrs Vivek Jain, Jaydev Mody and Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Nagpal were present.
