Judgement day at RWITC

Mumbai: The moment of truth has arrived for the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) as its stewards are set to deliver perhaps the most eagerly awaited decision in its history in a case involving three high-profile trainers whose horses had tested positive for anabolic steroid boldenone last January. The meeting will start at 12.30 p.m at Mahalaxmi Racecourse on Tuesday.
Having already reserved judgement in cases of two trainers, Pesi Shroff (Eloise) and Sheraz Sunderji (Ocean And Beyond) last Tuesday, the stewards, led by club chairman Vivek Jain, will hear out the arguments of third trainer Cooji Katrak (Star Future and Amaretto) before pronouncing the judgement.
For the very reason that these cases have caught the attention of racing fraternity throughout the country owing to never before seen media coverage, the RWITC stewards are expected to hand out harsh and exemplary punishment.
“We will go strictly by the rules, keeping in mind the past precedence,” said Jain. “Whatever the decision, we will give a detailed reasoned order in a complete transparent manner,” added Jain.
The fact that the concerned trainers belong to some of the top owners and sponsors at RWITC, speculations are doing rounds on the quantum of punishment. “I hope members don’t get led by hearsay and appreciate the fact that the stewards have gone through voluminous documents and a lengthy inquiry. The decision is bound to be debated. All I can assure is that it will be fair and based on the circumstances of the cases,” said Jain.
