Independence Cup Weekend keeps up the momentum
The higher numbers and betting noticed from the start of the Pune season reached a high as the popular Independence Cup Weekend was run off in splendid weather and a big crowd on both days.
The weekend attendance at Pune at over 10,000 was up 15% on last year and the tote betting just under Rs 2 crore, was about at par with last year- a significant statistic, considering the near average 30% falling Tote betting after the tax hike. It is hoped this turnaround in betting figures is maintained.
Sunday was a double header with two group races in the F.D.Wadia Trophy for the classic crop, and the Vascon Eve Champion Trophy for the older horses. The Wadia Trophy had a lucrative over Rs 2 million purse and the Eve Champion had first time sponsors in Vascon. The sponsors added a special dazzle to the day with a breathtaking display by Ukranian artists called Quick Change, which was much appreciated. Both group races were won by Pesi Shroff trained runners, who is hitting the mark repeatedly in the big races.
The Independence Cup was hosted for the fifth year in a row by PRA, and being run as a million the last two years. Rustom Bharucha announced to the Chairman their Group’s desire to continue their sponsorship for another five years. The Artillery Band added a special touch to Independence Day by an impressive repertoire of patriotic songs, climaxed by the National Anthem.
In attendance was Major General Saxena, GOC, Pune Sub Area, who gave away the Pune Sub-Area Trophy.
A high tea on both days were well attended and the media spotlight very much on the weekend racing.
