By Usman Rangeela

Pune Mirror

Horse-racing will finally get going in Western India after a summer break of nearly three months. RWITC chairman Vivek Jain unveiled the plans of the Pune racing season 2011 during a press conference held at the Turf Club House yesterday. The highlight of the monsoon racing, lasting just over three months, will be the McDowell Indian St Leger, the third leg of the Indian Triple Crown. The St Leger was run at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse since the 90s and returns to Pune after a gap of nearly two decades. This event is expected to attract some of the classic horses prominently those who have run in the Indian Oaks and the Derby.

RECORD NUMBER OF RACES

The Nanoli Stud sponsored Pune Derby and the SA Poonawalla Million will also share the limelight along with the St Leger. This apart, the RWITC will have a record number of races where the stake money on offer will exceed a million rupees. The total stake-money on offer this season is Rs 7.38 crore but the sum could exceed if some races are divided when sixteen or more horses are declared to run in an event. Jain has assured the racing fraternity that the club administration will strive to improve the facilities at the Pune racecourse in an effort to make the visit of the race-goers an enjoyable experience.
