Good times and a fighting spirit
By Milan Luthria

Keeping in mind the overall mood and downbeat atmosphere in racing, the first mega weekend of the current Mumbai season was a resounding success.

The famous Mahalaxmi track behaved like a beauty, with new records set in the Sir Homi Mehta Sprint Challenge (breaking the 57 second barrier), and in the Villoo Poonawalla Indian 2000 Guineas.

Foreign and Indian jockeys put up a fabulous display across both race days, none more than the “nose” that pipped the Trevor ridden Alexei by the Mackay powered Trouvaille.

It was the closest 2000 in recent memory, perhaps in even not so recent memory!

It was heartening to see Club members sponsoring races and adding stakes and style to the racing.

An emotional salute for the fiercely competitive and street smart Suraj Narredu on completing 2000 wins in spite of not having too many “retainers” in his career moved many. One wishes he would ride more often in Mumbai and raise the bar.

Finally, the 3 year pending settlement of Royalty from Bangalore Turf Club was achieved in 90 days, and the much needed restoration of stakes to 100% from 75% was announced.

It’s heartening to see the fighting spirit of all racing lovers come together to restore the game to its rightful glory.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all
