From the Horses Mouth - Race form Analysis Guide for Friday, 29th March 2019

- By Cyrus Naterwalla

Race No. 1 :- The Hyderabad Race Club Trophy – Class I & II – Distance :- 2000M

VULCAN :- Solid 6 year old stayer from the Adhirajsingh Jodha yard who has been in good form during the current campaign and is a winner of 6 of his 26 starts, most of them over distance trips. He began this season with a win over 2000M, getting the better of Raees and Frivolous and he should hold the latter on that form. He went on to finish runner up to Jack Frost in the JiwajiraoScindia over 1800M and last time out, finished 2 ¼ lengths clear of B Fifty Two when chasing home Caprisca in the C.N. Wadia Gold Cup. He is worse off on the scale with B Fifty Two for that last run so will need to find some more improvement but A. Sandesh takes the ride, he is working well and looks to have a strong chance to add another success.

B FIFTY TWO :- 7 year old gelding trained by Imtiaz Sait who has been a loyal servant to connections over the years winning multiple Group Races and successful in 8 of his 42 starts but age finally seems to have been catching up with him and he has failed to score in 6 previous starts this season, unable to get the better of Turning Point when dropped into a handicap over a mile, which one would have expected him to win. He ran a fair race in the C.N. Wadia when finishing 3rd behind Vulcan over a trip which stretches him so he is expected to gain revenge back down in trip and 2 ¾ lengths better off on the handicap. This appears to be his best opportunity to score this season and with P. Trevor in the saddle, who knows him extremely well he looks a leading contender to return to winning ways here.

FRIVOLOUS :- Well bred 6 year old from the stable of Malesh Narredu who has ability but has also been quite erratic in his 17 race career, winning thrice and placing on 8 occasions. He appears to be versatile with regards to trip but seldom runs 2 similar races and there is no telling in what mood he will turn up in today. He has had 3 runs this season before travelling to Hyderabad for the Stayers Cup where he finished well beaten and he appears to be held by Vulcan on their 2 previous meetings this season. P.S. Chouhan takes the ride today, he appears to be well within himself and if he runs upto his best then he can add some spice to the finish but is very unreliable which tempers enthusiasm.

GLORIOSUS :- 5 year old gelding who is a stable companion of B Fifty Two and has been struggling with his mark since scoring back to back wins over this trip earlier in the season. He has run 5 times since his last win over trips ranging from a mile to 2400M and did finish alongside B Fifty Two over a mile in receipt of 9 kilos. He has been kept fresh since his last run, comes off a length better than B Fifty Two on that mile running and with Neeraj Rawal booked to ride, looks to have a strong chance to return to the winner’s circle and is narrowly best off at the weights.

CONCLUSION :- On straight handicap, this looks to be between the 2 Imtiaz Sait runners, Gloriosusand B Fifty Two who finished alongside each other over a mile a couple of runs ago with Gloriosus a length better on the scale and the mile and a quarter trip likely to suit both. Vulcan has been in good form this season and looks the main danger.

Race No. 2 :- The Jayant M. Shah Plate – Class IV & V – Distance :- 1600M
STRONG STORM :- Lightly raced 4 year old filly from the Dallas Todywalla yard who seems to be regaining her form since reverting to handicaps after a couple of unsuccessful Classic attempts and has finished runner up in her last 2 starts. She attempted to make all the running when 2nd to Star Aligned on her penultimate run and then last time out, came from off the pace and just failed to catch Aberlour close home over 7 furlongs. The return to a mile looks likely to suit, she has pleased in her couple of workouts since the run and with P. Trevor in the saddle, looks a leading fancy to get back to winning ways and make it 3rd time lucky.

HODSON’S HORSE :- 4 year old gelding trained by Adhirajsingh Jodha who has had just 2 starts so far so looks open to plenty of progress and has run well on both prior occasions. He was an impressive winner over 6 furlongs on debut and then stepped up to 7 furlongs on Derby Day, ran a promising race when finishing on strongly to be 3rd to Hells Bells upped to 7 furlongs and he was later promoted to runner up after a successful objection. He is likely to improve on just his 3rd career start and the additional furlong is likely to suit judging from his previous efforts. However, the booking of rookie apprentice Malam Singh does not exactly inspire confidence and would be deemed to be a negative. He should improve though and merits each way consideration.

SULLIVAN :- Owner mate of Strong Storm who will be ridden by good 5 kilo claimer A.S. Peter which gives him a clear edge on the handicap over the filly as they ran together last time out, with Strong Storm finishing a length and a quarter ahead conceding 1 kilo. He did manage to score over 7 furlongs a couple of starts ago but has been disappointing in his 2 efforts since and needs to bounce back. He does appear to be well placed on the scale though and if A.S. Peter is able to handle him well and deliver him at the right time, then he definitely has a chance to add another win to his tally.

BHAKTAWAR :- 6 year old gelding from the small stable of C. Rajendra who has hit a rich vein of form in his last few starts and appears to be in the pink of condition at present. After needing a lung opener at the beginning of the season, he caught the eye when finishing on strongly over this trip to be a close 3rd to Eagleinthesky and Sylvester in spite of getting left and he went on to score back to back wins over 1400M in the lower class. Upped into this grade and back at a mile last time out, he again ran creditably when finishing a length behind Excellent Sorrento and seems to have held his form since the run. Neeraj Rawal who has been riding him is in the saddle again, he looks to be progressing nicely at present and looks to have a very good chance to gain his 3rd success of the current campaign.

GOLD MEDALIST :- 4 year old gelding trained by S.K. Sunderji who is returning from a gap of almost 2 months but impressed when last seen on the Derby weekend, scoring his maiden success over this trip, beating Rogue One by just under 2 lengths and he appears to be better placed on the scale than Bhaktawar on their last meeting earlier in the season. He should have gained some confidence from the win, a 4 ½ kilo penalty seems fair and if he has improved from his last run then he looks a leading fancy with A. Sandesh in the saddle.

CONCLUSION :- This looks quite competitive on paper with a couple of different handicap lines. Gold Medalist shed his maiden tag last time out and if fit and well after nearly 2 months off looks to have a good chance to repeat. Sullivan looks the better handicapped of the two Shapoor Mistry runners but Strong Storm is the choice of P. Trevor and looks to be a big danger as well having gotten going a bit too late last time out.

Race No. 3 :- The Raza Ali Plate – Maiden 3 Year Olds – Distance :- 1200M

EDDIE THE EAGLE :- Outstation challenger trained by Md. Sajid Qureshi who made his debut over 1000M just 12 days ago and finished on nicely from the rear of the field to be 4th to Daddy’s Pride with the same rider on board. He is likely to have learnt from the experience and stripped fitter and is likely to be suited by the additional furlong. He should make some progress from his debut run if the race does not come too soon and looks to have an each way chance if building on that first effort.

HIDDEN GOLD :- Fashionably bred debutant from the Dallas Todywalla yard who is a half brother to Marianella and looks a quality sort on paper. There is no recorded trackwork so a paddock check is advised to ascertain his fitness and he may be going in for an airing but the field does not look particularly strong and the booking of A. Sandesh catches the eye. Yard is usually good with first time out runners so he must be respected and could have the quality to tackle this bunch today. Dangerous to ignore.

DIVIJA :- Once raced Speaking of Which filly from the S.K. Sunderji yard who was given an educative run about 5 weeks ago, finishing midfield behind Gallantry in what did not look a particularly strong maiden but is sure to have learnt from the experience and should leave that running well behind today. She has been given time to strengthen and improve for that run and P.S. Chouhan has been booked to ride today replacing S. Zervan. As with most of these, a paddock check is advised to ascertain her condition but she should improve for the run and can be involved if looking well.

DREAM :- Well bred filly from the yard of Nazak Chenoy who has had 2 runs so far this season, creating a good impression on debut over this trip when a late finishing 5th behind Thailand in a strong maiden and she was very well supported over 1400M last time out but ran disappointingly when only 5th to Juliette and needs to bounce back from that effort. She has been given time to recover from that below par performance, has been showing out well in the morning trials of late and has been entrusted to her work rider, stable apprentice Santosh G. The draw has not been kind to her in Stall 13, but she may relish the return to sprinting and if reproducing her excellent trackwork, has a very good chance to make it 3rd time lucky. Respected.

EYE CANDY :- Stable companion of Hidden Gold who has had the benefit of experience, given an educative run over this trip very early in the season and looks to have improved significantly for that effort. She has shown good improvement in her recent workouts and was given a Mock Race 12 days ago where she was stretched but finished well clear of Despacito so she appears to be fit and well and with P. Trevor in the saddle, is another who possesses each way claims and is expected to give a better account of herself from a good draw in Stall 2.

MIRABILIS :- Twice raced full sister to Your Royal Majesty from the powerful Pesi Shroff yard who certainly looks the part on paper and has been given time by her trainer to come to hand. Finishing about 4 lengths behind Dream on her debut, she showed some improvement last time out when finishing on to be 3rd behind Castilian over course and distance. That run was 2 ½ weeks ago so she is likely to have improved again and after being ridden by N.S. Parmar the last twice, has Neeraj Rawal in the saddle today. She should eventually prefer being upped to middle distances but if building on her last run, looks  a very strong contender to shed her maiden tag at the third time of asking.

CONCLUSION :- Mirabilis showed good improvement last time out and with further progress anticipated is selected to get off the mark today. Dream is better than she showed last time out and looks the main danger while nicely bred debutant Hidden Gold also looks a quality prospect and is feared

Race No. 4 :- The Rustomji Byramji Trophy – Class IV & V – Distance :- 1200M

RUN FOREST RUN :- Smartly bred Excellent Art 4 year old gelding trained by S.N. Joshi after beginning his career with Shazaan Shah, he has run 8 times so far and has finished runner up on 4 occasions, winning once over course and distance last season as a juvenile. He has been brought along steadily, having only 2 prior runs this season, running a forward race before finishing a close 4th to Anatevka on reappearance and then going on to finish runner up to El Commandante on his last run on this track. He then travelled to Hyderabad for a Million race on Invitation weekend and again acquitted himself well, proving no match for Mozambique but ending up a good 2nd. Back on home turf he appears to be taking on a relatively weak field and with A.S. Peter taking a valuable 5 kilos off his back, he looks set to return to the winner’s circle and is given a strong chance to score today.

JUNO’S GUEST :- Another highly regarded sort from a relatively small stable, this daughter of Arazan trained by Vinesh has performed with credit in her limited career so far and looks open to significant improvement after just 3 starts. Quietly fancied on her debut in Pune, she was green and inexperienced and began to gallop late when finishing midfield behind Pablo but showed the benefit of that experience on her seasonal debut here, showing good speed to score over 1200M from end to end beating Outrageous quite comfortably. Upped to 7 furlongs last time out, she again ran a fine race in defeat finishing a good 2nd to Lorraine but has been off the track since which is a slight concern. She will have fitness to prove after almost 3 months off the track but resuming in the same vein, she looks a strong contender with Akshay back in the saddle.

QUAIL HOLLOW :- Another lightly raced an potentially smart 4 year old gelding trained by Bezan Chenoy, he has been held in quite high regard by his connections and was well fancied on both his previous starts but has come up short. He caught the eye on his debut last season over 1000M, finishing on strongly to be runner up to Rose Gold and was well fancied early in the Pune season over 1400M but ran disappointingly to end up 4th to Frieze although he was not beaten a long way. He was subsequently gelded and has been steadily brought along since that time and will be having his first start after 7 months so may understandably be rusty and need the lung opener. However, he looks to have been well prepared for this reappearance and has been given a Mock Race to improve his fitness. Stable apprentice Santosh G takes the ride today and he does merit consideration but is likely to need a run after the long absence and may find one or two too good for him today.

TRANSFORM :- 5 year old mare from the Nosher Cama stable who was a last gasp winner over course and distance last time out, coming with a powerful run to get up in virtually the last stride and snatch the race from Silver Cap by a whisker. She comes into the race full of confidence now upped in grade and 4 kilo penalty seems quite fair. With several of the runners returning from an absence, she appears to be one in this field who is fit and well and with P.S. Chouhan taking the ride, looks likely to make a bold bid for a quick encore.

CONCLUSION :- Run Forest Run appears to have the best form in this race lacking strength in depth and looks set to give improving 5 kilo claimer A. S. Peter another winner. With both Juno’s Guest and Quail Hollow returning from a setback, last outing winner Transform appears to be the main danger.

Race No. 5 :- The V. P. Koreogaonkar Plate – Class III & IV, 5YO & over – Distance :- 1400M

KINGSMAN :- Well bred 5 year old gelding trained by young Deepesh Narredu who began his racing career just this season and already has a 50% strike rate, having won 3 of his 6 starts so far including 3 of the last 4. His wins have come over 7 furlongs and a mile and after running a close 4th to Flying Visit on his penultimate run, he returned to winning ways with an authoritative victory last time out, beating Western Front convincingly with Relentless Pursuit finishing 3rd that day. It is interesting that good 5 kilo claimer A.S. Peter has been booked to ride for the first time today but his claim offsets the 5 ½ kilo penalty for the last win and he appears to be in fine trim at present. He may yet have some more improvement left in him and in this older horses contest, he looks hard to oppose.

ARC SHINE :- Consistent 5 year old mare trained by S. N. Joshi who looked to be returning to form in her last few starts after a quiet Pune campaign. Winner of 3 of her 23 starts so far but having placed on 10 occasions, she ran a good race over a mile a couple of runs ago to finish upsides of Kingsman and duly obliged over 6 furlongs next time out, getting up late to pip El Commandante. She went on to run a fair 3rd to Flying Visit over this trip last time out but it is significant that P. Trevor has been booked to ride today, replacing K. Nazil who rode the last twice. She appears to be well within herself at present and looks a strong each way contender here.

CELESTIAL LIGHT :- 6 year old mare who used to be in the care of Imtiaz Sait but was recently sold into the yard of Bipin V. Salvi and will be ridden by Nirmal Jodha. Having a similar record to Arc Shine having won 4 of her 29 starts she was successful over this trip in Mysore back in January and was brought down to campaign in Mumbai where she has had 3 runs till date without success. She advertised her fitness over a sharp 1000M last time out when finishing 4th to King Khalil and now back up at her pet trip, she is another who is given an each way chance and should be considered.

QUESTIONABLE :- 5 year old gelding from the S.A. Waheed yard who is an owner mate of Kingsman and will be ridden by retained jockey P.S. Chouhan. Relatively lightly raced for his age, he took a few starts to come to hand but scored impressive back to back wins over this trip in Pune and has run well in his 3 starts this term suggesting that he is still progressing. He finished runner up to Safdar over this trip in a similar contest on his penultimate run and last time out upped to a mile, ran a decent 3rd to Spitfire and is closely matched with his owner mate on a line through Flying Visit. He has blinkers snapped on today, looks to be well within himself and could prove to be a big danger to all.

GOSHAWK :- 5 year old gelding trained by M.K. Jadhav who has had a  relatively poor season this time around but possesses a potent turn of foot when on song and is quite unexposed having run only 10 times so far, finishing runner up in 5 of those starts. His maiden success came over 2000M but he is effective over middle distances as well, poorly ridden when a close 2nd to Angels Touch over a mile back in Pune. He was clearly unfit and needed the run last time out when given a forward run over 1200M and that being his first run in 6 months, he is sure to strip fitter. N.S. Parmar takes over from D.A. Naik today which is a positive, and although the yard’s current poor run is a worry, he is definitely a contender and may spring a surprise at a good price. Value outsider.

SASSY LASS :- Well bred 5 year old mare from the stable of Asad Siddiqui who has made the board in 9 of her 14 starts till date, winning on 2 occasions, both wins coming back to back during the recent Pune campaign where she was in sparkling form. She started off the season with a good 3rd behind Grand Tenton and Hyannis over this trip and last time out, needed the run back from a short break when finishing on over 1200M to be not too far behind the winner and now back at this trip and with Akshay among the winners this season, looks likely to give it a good go again and while try hard to get back the winning habit.

RELENTLESS PURSUIT :- Game galloping 7 year old from the in form Imtiaz Sait stable, he has managed to win 2 of his 24 starts so far but looks to be on a competitive mark at present. He has finished 3rd in all his 3 starts this season, all of them over a mile and is closely matched with Kingsman on their last meeting. He has been working well since the last run, S. Zervan takes the ride today in place of Neeraj Rawal and from the bottom of the weights, he looks an each way player and does have a small chance to upset although more exposed than some of these.

CONCLUSION :- Very competitive as most of these races tend to be and hard to pick a winner with several chances. Kingsman is the marginal selection as he has been making good progress this season and has current form but he faces a long list of dangers headed by owner mate Questionable and the enigmatic Goshawk

Race No. 6 :- The S.A. Wahid Plate – Class V – Distance :- 1400M

LAMBRETTA :-   Nicely bred 4 year old gelding from the Karthik G. yard who still seems to be finding his feet and is a maiden after 11 starts over varying trips. He has run a couple of forward races in defeat and looked like he was ready to strike last time out over this trip when not appearing to get too much assistance from the saddle but still ending up an excellent close 3rd to Deccan King and Huzzah’s Grace both of whom are in the field again today. Bhawani Singh now takes over from the feeble A. Prakash in the saddle, he looks to be coming to hand slowly and in similar conditions, looks to have a very good chance to get off he the mark and looks one of the chief contenders.

HUZZAH’S GRACE :- Well handicapped 5 year old mare trained by Imtiaz Sait who has managed just 1 win in 20 starts so far and has been out of form for some time now but showed that she had slipped to a favourable mark last time out when coming with a rattling run before being unable to sustain over course and distance, ending up a close 2nd to Deccan King. She looks weighted to gain revenge today with the winner incurring a penalty but is not completely a straightforward type and is not guaranteed to reproduce that last performance. H. Zeeshan who rode her last time out keeps the ride and she certainly has strong claims if she has her galloping shoes on but needs to turn up in the right frame of mind and comes with risks attached.

DECCAN KING :- Aged 7 year old gelding from the stable of H. J. Antia who took advantage of his lenient handicap mark and showed he still retains zest for racing, showing a willing attitude to come back with a 2nd run and score in a fighting finish from Huzzah’s Grace and Lambretta. His 5 ½ kilo penalty makes life tougher with limited scope for improvement but P.S. Chouhan is a  very rare booking for the yard and suggests that connections fancy their chances for a quick encore. He is expected to run well again, has current form and should not be ignored.

MACGYVER :- Maiden 5 year old gelding who is trained by S.A. Waheed and has put in some promising performances this season and steps up to a middle distance trip for the first time which looks interesting. He has raced only over sprint trips this season, both his seconds coming over a 5 furlong trip and he has run 4 times in all so it is interesting that he is stepped up in trip today with M. Ayyar taking over in the saddle and claiming a useful 3 ½ kilos. He has been finishing on late in his races so may be suited by the longer trip and has the potential to cause an upset if unlocking some improvement over this new trip. Worth keeping and eye on and including in the Jackpot Pool.

SMOKY HAZE :- 6 year old maiden trained by Adhirajsingh Jodha who’s losing run has stretched to 21 now but she was knocking at the door in the early part of the season and although only 6th behind a bunch of these when favourite last time out, it was her first run back from a short break and she may have been a shade rusty. She should have improved for that run and stripped fitter today, Neeraj Rawal takes over from A. Sandesh in the saddle and if reverting back to her earlier form, looks a strong each way player and should be involved.

WHOOPSIDAISY :- Front running 5 year old mare from the stable of Faisal Abbas, she has gone 23 starts without a win but her mark has plummeted as a result and she has been running suggestively the last couple of starts. She led for a long way over a mile last time out before finishing 3rd in a photo with Arrecife and Master of Studies and was only reeled-in in the last few strides. The shorter trip should be to her advantage, she is running practically bareback at 44.5 kilos and if A.S. Peter can control the gallop from the front, she may finally gain that elusive first success today.

CONCLUSION :- Highly competitiveand probably best left alone from a betting standpoint. The ones to focus on appear to be Lambretta, Smoky Haze, Whoopsidaisy and Macgyver and the winner should emerge from amongst this quartet.
