From the Horses Mouth - Race form Analysis Guide for Sunday, 24th February 2019

- By Cyrus Naterwalla

Race No. 1 :- The R.N. Kanga Trophy – Class I and II – Distance :- 1600M

B FIFTY TWO :- 7 year old veteran from the stable of Imtiaz Sait who has an admirable overall record of 8 wins and 14 placed efforts from his 40 career starts and he has won multiple Group Races in the past but age just seems to be catching up with him. He has been winless since February of last year and has looked vulnerable in 4 starts this season but ran an excellent race last time out in The Eclipse to finish a decent 4th behind Smasher. He drops down into a handicap now and has been working well of late which are also encouraging signs and P. Trevor has been booked to ride. He takes on a couple of progressive younger horses so does look to have a tough task but if he can build on that last effort, then he looks to have a very strong chance to gain another deserving win with the drop down to a mile likely to suit him.

GRAND ACCORD :- Improving 5 year old gelding from the yard of Karthik G. he seems to have developed into something of a mile specialist and all of his 5 wins from his 14 runs have come over this trip. He won 3 consecutive races over this trip starting from April last year and continued his good form this season when coming with a strong late run to wear down Brainstorm close home on seasonal reappearance and he finished ahead of Forest Fairy and Turning Point that day although both have improved since. He came up short the last twice though when pitted against tough opposition and will need to find some more improvement. Outstation rider R.N. Darshan takes the ride today and it looks tough for him to confirm the form with Forest Fairy and Turning Point and he looks more of a place contender.

FOREST FAIRY :- Lightly raced and well performed 5 year old mare trained by Bezan Chenoy who has finished outside the frame just once in her 12 race career, winning on 5 occasions which is a fine record. She was possibly in need of the run when finishing 3rd to Grand Accord and went on to pip Turning Point over 1400M next time out and is 3 ¾ lengths worse off with that rival on that run. She could not match strides with Costa Brava when tackling Class I for the first time but that run should be taken with a pinch of salt as she was found to have bled after that run. She has been rested and freshened up since then and her last couple of workouts suggest that she is back to her best. A. Sandesh takes the ride today and she looks set to recapture her form and is very likely to be in the thick of things,

TURNING POINT :- Temperamental 5 year old mare from the S.K. Sunderji yard who clearly has ability but is also very quirky and is fully effective over this trip. She is a winner of 5 of her 18 starts, most of them over middle distances and was given an inspired ride by P. Trevor last time out to come and pip Brainstorm close home over 1400M. She looks well handicapped vis-à-vis Grand Accord and Forest Fairy and seems to have maintained her condition since the run. She comes into this race at the top of her game, Neeraj Rawal takes the ride and if she is in a galloping mood and runs upto her best, then she looks to have an excellent chance to go in again.

CONCLUSION :- B Fifty Two is the selection in the hope that he will build on his excellent run in the Eclipse Stakes last time out and the drop in trip should suit him. In case he age is finally catching up with him, then Turning Point looks the next best. Forest Fairy with Sandesh in the saddle is also respected

Race No. 2 :- The Kumar R. Dalal Gold Trophy – Maiden 3 Year Olds – Distance :- 1000M

ACROSS THE SEA :- Experienced 3 year old gelding from the powerful Pesi Shroff yard who has already had 3 runs this season and has finished 4th on a couple of occasions. He caught the eye on debut when finishing on from the rear to be a leisurely 4th behind Tommaso and ran a forward race in the Usha Stud Million upped to 1200M before retiring. Dropped down to 1000M again, he finished a fair 4th behind Oui Savage, with Turmeric Tower making her debut only ¾ length away. He looks to be taking on a field which does not look particularly strong and hence looks to be one the principal contenders with P. Trevor in the saddle and the rail draw in his favour.

DADDY’S PRIDE :- Debutant 3 year old colt from the small stable of Subhag Singh who is not known for debut winners usually but appears to have been given enough work to be fit and ready to go on debut. He is a half brother to Contributor who rattled off a hattrick of wins in Mysore so could be a decent sort and P.S. Chouhan is an eye catching Jockey booking. A paddock check is advised to ascertain his fitness and if looking well, could be capable of troubling the rest in this weak field.

KANADARIO :- Nicely bred Arazan gelding who is one of 3 runners for the Narendra Lagad yard in this field and has been showing out well in the morning gallops. He has moved attractively in his couple of workouts and appears to be a promising prospect although he may be a touch short on fitness today. Both of his siblings, Xipen and Amazing Melody were relatively well performed and with N.S. Parmar taking the ride, he could be on worth keeping an eye on.

RUNNING RIVER :- Another got abroad debut from the Vishal Gaikwad yard, this son of Corporate Jungle out of a Galileo mare is a half brother to Paramour who performed extremely well in Western India never finishing out of the frame in 11 runs, winning thrice and finishing runner up 6 times all over sprints. The other siblings, Burnished Gold and The Soprano are also quite well performed so he looks interesting from a pedigree standpoint. He looks to be a little short on preparatory work and may be going in for an educative run but a paddock check is definitely advised and Akshay has been booting in quite a few winners this season. Promising sort and respected.

CELESTIA :- One of the most experienced in this line up with 4 runs already, this Saamidd filly trained by Dallas Todywalla did nothing on her first 3 runs but showed a little improvement when racing just last week in a similar maiden and ending up a close 4th to Silver Flames. She is turned out again quickly and may find the race coming a bit too soon but can be expected to progress again. She looks vulnerable to anything with a bit of quality but could be involved in the frame with Neeraj Rawal in the saddle.

TURMERIC TOWER :- 3rd runner from the Narendra Lagad stable and possibly the most fancied of the bunch with stable Jockey Dashrath Singh taking the ride. She made a promising debut over course and distance 3 weeks ago when not given an unduly hard time and finishing on nicely to be just ¾ length behind the more experienced Across the Sea and should improve for that educative run and strip fitter. This being just her 2nd start, she is expected to make significant improvement and should be able to reverse the places today. Dashrath Singh takes the ride again, she too is well berthed in stall 2 and looks to have a very strong chance to shed her maiden tag in this company.

CONCLUSION :- This looks likely to be straight fight between Across the Sea and Turmeric Tower with the latter expected to improve enough to reverse the places with greater scope to improve. Runners from the Shroff yard however find considerable improvement themselves and it will be no surprise if the form were to hold. Kanadario looks a speedy debutant and may be good enough to tackle the pair and upset.

Race No. 3 :- The Intervalve Poonawalla Ltd. Trophy – Class IV & V – Distance :- 2400M

JAGER BOMB :- Aged 8 year old gelding from the Imtiaz Sait yard who has run 42 times so far, winning on 3 occasions and placing 14 times. He has dropped in the weights as his form has tapered off in the later stages of his career but he showed he still retains ability when finishing runner up to Emotionless over 2000M on his penultimate run. However, he finished well behind Momentum last time out over this trip and in spite of P. Trevor taking over today, he looks up against it and should be more of a minor berth contender at best.

MOMENTUM :- Improving 5 year old half brother to Tiger Tops who seems to be just coming to hand and has been improving steadily with every run this season. He has had just 6 runs so far so looks likely to continue improving and gained a decisive maiden success over course and distance last time out with the same rider up, decisively beating Brazos and Retained Asset. He is up a further 5 ½ kilos but is expected to take the penalty in his stride and looks to have an excellent chance to go in again with Akshay in the saddle again. The one to beat.

MOUNT OLYMPUS :- 4 year old gelding from the Narendra Lagad yard who is a winner of 2 of his 13 starts till date but it is interesting to note that his wins have been front running efforts over 6 and 7 furlongs and he now takes a marked step up in trip. He has never raced beyond a mile till date but looks to have the pedigree to stay this longer trip so looks a very interesting outsider who may be able to score a stunning upset if the step up in trip brings about marked improvement. J. Chinoy takes the ride and he is worth keeping an eye on.

BRAZOS :- Exposed but consistent 6 year old gelding from the M.K. Jadhav yard who relishes this gruelling trip and has been in good form this season, first chasing home Tar Heel over this trip and last time out finishing runner up behind Momentum, 2 ½ lengths adrift. Overall a winner of 2 of his 18 starts, on paper he comes out 2 ½ lengths better than Momentum on the last run and A. Sandesh who rode him last time out keeps the ride. However, it is expected that Momentum will find the required improvement to defy the penalty and he might end up 2nd best again today. Looks the handicap pick though.

ROUSSEAU :- Another very interesting and well bred 6 year old gelding trained by Altamash Ahmed, he has been very highly regarded but had his career plagued by injuries and has had only 6 runs as a result, finishing runner up on 2 occasions. He did finish a close 2nd to Winter Renaissance the only time that he was tried over this trip but that run came more than 2 years ago and he has since run poorly, having 2 well spaced out runs in 2018 over 1400. His last run came in August so he returns from another extended absence and clearly will have fitness to prove. The booking of A.S. Peter suggests that he may attempt pillar to post tactics and although he does look to have a chance at his best, percentage call is to oppose here and he will probably need this run.

RETAINED ASSET :- 4 year old gelding from the yard of Adhirajsingh Jodha who is still a maiden and has been frustrating his connections have failed to deliver on a number of occasions. He has shown some improvement when stepping up to staying trips, finishing a distant 2nd to Bluebell over 1800M and then again runner up to Kennedy over 2000M. However, he has plenty of work to do to reverse form with Momentum and Brazos as he finished 4th well behind them over this trip last time out. Dashrath Singh who rode him last time out keeps the ride and if he finds some more improvement over this trip then he could upset off the low weight.

CONCLUSION :- Momentum seems to be going the right way at present and in spite of being out handicapped withBrazos, looks likely to make the required improvement to go in again. The well bred Rousseau has the capability of upsetting but is returning from a long absence

Race No. 4 :- The Poonawalla Breeders Multi Million (Grade 1 ) – Terms 3 Years Old Only – Distance :- 1400M

HEADWAY :- One of three runners from the in form S.K. Sunderji yard and possibly one of the more fancied ones with S. Zervan in the saddle. Both his runs so far have come over 1200M, getting an educative run when finishing 5th to Kariega on debut but showing significant improvement next time out in the B.K. Rattonsey Memorial Multi Million on Derby Day when beating Missing You by a length and a quarter. He looks to have improved further judging from his subsequent workouts and should not mind the step up to 7 furlongs. He looks to be one the chief contenders and would be very dangerous to ignore.

MAKHTOOB :- The 2nd runner from the S.K. Sunderji yard, this son of Speaking of Which has a nice pedigree and scored a bloodless maiden win over course and distance but in what looked a relatively weak maiden set and he will need to improve significantly to have a say in this much tougher company. He does look open to improvement though, A. Imran Khan has been flown down for the ride and cannot be totally ignored although he does not seem to have the form to score.

MARINETTI :- One of three out station challengers in the field and probably the one who appeals the most, she comes from Hyderabad and is unbeaten in 2 starts so far, both runs coming over sprint trips. She was an impressive winner over 1100M beating Born Greek comfortably by 3 lengths and clocking an extremely impressive time of 1.05.93 for the trip and followed that up with a decisive win in the Darley Arabian Million over 6 furlongs next time out. She has showed plenty of speed on both runs so is not certain to stay this longer trip but clearly looks to be an above average type and is trained by Laxman Singh. She has not appeared to be stopping in both her runs and was given an easy Mock Race last week to get acclimatized. Her regular saddle partner Akshay Kumar takes the ride, she looks a classy sort and must be respected and feared.

TROUVAILLE :- Well bred maiden who is the 3rd of the Sunderji wards and possibly has the strongest form on offer, having finished runner up to Hunt for Gold on both his starts so far. He had a bit of an excuse on both occasions, first time out forced wide and finishing on late and last time out, baulked for an opening and having to switch to the outside losing valuable ground and again finishing on late. He was in receipt of weight last time out and now returns to level weights which will work against him but clearly looks to be a good sort and should run a very big race. P.S. Chouhan has been booked to ride today, he looks well within himself and looks a very strong each way contender who should run well and be involved in the frame.

ENID BLYTON :- Big powerful looking filly trained by Altamash Ahmed who has had both runs upto now over 1000M and has finished on strongly in both starts suggesting that she will relish more galloping ground. She came from out of the clouds to finish runner up to Ms Boss on debut and then when a strong favourite next time out, possibly was given too much to do and was motoring at the close to be an excellent close 3rd to Oui Savage and Storm Breaker, beaten just half a length. She looks certain to be suited by the step up to this trip and could prove to be a value each way outsider who could add some pep to the finish. Neeraj Rawal is back in the saddle replacing Y.S. Srinath, she clearly has possibilities and is dangerous to ignore.

FREE GOLD :- Smartly bred filly from the Imtiaz Sait yard who created a very good impression on debut in the Gool S. Poonawalla Million to come with a late run to get the better of Tommaso in the closing stages, scoring by ¾ length with subsequent winner Dandi March ending up a close 3rd. That was her first run so she is expected to improve appreciably and she should also be suited by the additional furlong. Robbie Downey who rode her last time out keeps the ride, she looks sure to improve a bundle for the run and looks to have a very good chance to make it two for two and keep her unbeaten record. Seems to have plenty of potential.

HUNT FOR GOLD :- Classy looking unbeaten daughter of Oaks winner Pleasure Hunt from the powerful yard of Pesi Shroff, she has already shown that she has plenty of class and has won both her starts over this trip with a measure of comfort. Looking a little green and inexperienced on debut, she was in the rear in the early stages and had to be driven to get going but once hitting her stride, she put the issue beyond doubt and the notable factor is that she clocked a faster timing than Ruffina for 7 furlongs on the same day which is an extremely notable achievement. She showed she had learnt plenty next time out in the Breeders Produce Stakes when given a confident ride by Srinath to convincingly beat Trouvaille. She appears to have maintained her form and fitness since the run, Srinath keeps the ride and she looks the one that they all have to beat and should be the most likely winner.

MISSING YOU :- Twice raced maiden Arazan filly trained by Dallas Todywalla who has finished runner up on both starts over 6 furlongs, chasing home Thailand on debut and then going to finish runner up to Headway last time out. Her style of racing suggests that she will relish the additional furlong as she has gotten going late on both occasions and David Allan is a very eye catching jockey booking. The same connections won this race with Ruffina year before last and are looking to turn back the clock. She is working well and could very well be involved if progressing again.

CONCLUSION :- As expected a very competitive affair but it is hard to look beyond the unbeaten Hunt for Gold. She has already proven that this trip is the bare minimum for her and has won both her starts impressively clocking a smart time on both occasions. The Gool S. Poonawalla Million winner Free Gold looks likely to be a danger with plenty of improvement expected while the Hyderabad challenger Marinetti has looked a classy sort on both runs and is also feared. For the 4th spot in the contest one could choose between Enid Blyton who looks the dark horse, old rival Trouvaille and Missing You.

Race No. 5 :- The Sir Victor Sassoon Gold Trophy – Class III & IV – Distance :- 1400M

INTENSE STYLIST :- 4 year old gelding from the S.K. Sunderji yard who has a 50% strike rate so far having won 3 of his 6 starts and while he came up short in the Indian 2000 Guineas, he is unbeaten over this 7 furlong trip having won all 3 starts over it. A smooth winner of the Morvi on his reappearance he finished 6th in the Guineas and was withdrawn on his intended last start over 1200M on Derby Day. He seems to be in fine trim judging from his recent workouts and P. Trevor takes the ride. He looks set to resume his upward curve back at his pet trip of 7 furlongs and looks likely to pick up the winning thread again today. Leading fancy.

MOZART :- Classy and improving 4 year old grey from the Pesi Shroff yard who returned from a long absence and seems to be regaining his form very quickly. Winner of the Nilgiris 2000 Guineas in the summer he seemed to suffer a setback in the Nilgiris Derby where he finished a disappointing 5th and he was rested and given time to improve, reappearing only in January where he was given a lung opener over 1400M when hitting the front and kicking on to finish 3rd to Valegro. He was a shade unlucky to just get pipped by Flaming Martini last time out over 6 furlongs and will relish the return to this trip. Leigh Roche takes over in the saddle for the first time, he is expected to improve again and could have the class to upset Intense Stylist so looks a very big threat.

AWESOME ONE :- Lightly raced and well performed Classic contender from the yard of Deepesh Narredu he has won 2 of his 5 starts so far and after finishing runner up to Excellent on debut and then winning both his starts over 1400M impressively, he had his limitations exposed in the 2000 Guineas and the Ruia, finishing well beaten on both occasions. He did not appear to stay the 2000M trip either but returns to handicap company now and the drop in trip looks ideal. Regular rider Yash Narredu is reunited with him taking over from C.S. Jodha and he looks to be a very live danger to the other 2 four year olds and would not surprise if he were to bounce back and win this. Keep an eye.

MISS MONEYPENNY :- Exposed 5 year old handicapper trained by Imtiaz Sait, she has won 2 of her 17 starts so far and has been campaigned exclusively over sprint trips till date so steps up to a middle distance for the very first time. She has looked to be in the handicapper’s grip in all her 3 runs this season last time out finishing up 5th to Kaneez over 1200M. Her come from behind style suggests that it would be worth trying over this longer trip and N.S. Parmar has been booked to ride but she is taking on potentially quality colts and place seems to be the best that she could hope for today.

CONCLUSION :- One would expect to see a thrilling battle between the 3 Classic prospects Intense Stylist, Mozart and Awesome One and there should be very little to choose between the trio. The Shroff ward is just given the nod as he looks to be improving with every run while Intense Stylist was withdrawn at the start last time out which is a slight worry and Awesome One returns from his classic trysts having been trained for 2000M last time out.

Race No. 6 :- The Dr. Goolam E. Vahanvati Gold Trophy – Class IV & V – Distance :- 1200M

DIVINE POWER :- Enigmatic 4 year old gelding from the Altaf Hussain stable who has slowly been working is way back into form after losing his way since his maiden success last season as a juvenile and finally got back to winning ways just last week with a pillar to post performance over course and distance, holding off Jetfire bravely to score by a length and a half. He is turned out again quickly under a statutory penalty but remains in the same class and A. Sandesh has been booked to ride. He looks open to further improvement, should gain confidence from the win and with Trainer and Jockey both in top form at the moment, looks a very big danger to all in spite of the heavy impost.

BOUNTY QUEEN :- Got abroad 6 year old mare trained by Adhirajsingh Jodha, she has won 3 of her 22 starts till date and seems to be effective over this trip. All her 3 wins came very early in her career but she then lost her way and looks to be on the way back after a few seasons in the wilderness. She has looked in good form this term, running well in defeat and last time out finished runner up to Flower Dust over this trip. She has been kept fresh since her last run and rookie 5 kilo claimer D.S. Shubham takes the ride which is not exactly confidence inspiring. She should run well again and be in the frame but may find it tough to win against the younger horses.

EDEN ROCK :- Lightly raced 4 year old gelding trained by Dallas Todywalla who looked a bright prospect when winning his first 2 starts but seems to have taken backward step since then and has been finishing well beaten in all his races. He has had 2 runs this term, finishing 6th to Anatevka before ending up 9th last time out behind El Commandante. He may have needed those runs to get back to fitness and has been working quite well of late. P. Trevor who has ridden him throughout gets a leg up again today, he does have the scope to improve as he still lightly raced and could be involved in the mix if returning to his earlier form. Each way outsider.

NOTTING HILL :- Consistent and progressive 4 year old handicapper from the S.K. Sunderji stable who has run 8 times so far over varied trips and scored his maiden success over 1400M on his penultimate run when getting the better of Fleur De Lys and Aquarius. He did not seem to appreciate the step up to a mile last time out and has decent form over 6 furlongs in the past so this drop in trip seems logical. The form of his 2nd place to Improvisso over this trip in Pune looks very strong and if running upto that level, he looks to have a very strong chance to return to winning ways with Neeraj Rawal in the saddle.

PATRIOT’S DAY :- Sparingly raced got abroad 4 year old who began his career with Vishal Gaikwad but was recently sold into the yard of Narendra Lagad and is having his first start for new connections. His solitary previous success in 4 runs till date came over a mile from pillar to post so it is interesting that he is dropped down to this sprint trip. Dashrath Singh has been booked to ride, he has been working well and if having the speed for this shorter trip, could very well be a factor. Dark horse.

DAZZLING STAR :- Well bred and highly regarded 4 year old filly trained by Rehanullah Khan, she has had just 2 runs so far and is returning from a substantial break so clearly will have fitness to prove. An impressive maiden winner over this trip last April on debut where she comfortably beat Golden Hind and Intense Stylist, she was a hot favourite when reappearing in Pune over 1400M but possibly did not take to the track and ended up a disappointing 5th behind Sassy Lass. She has been given time to improve and strengthen since then and returns from another 6 month break so is entitled to need this. Her trainer is very good at preparing horses after a long absence and she looks to have been given plenty of work so she looks a live danger to all with N.S. Parmar in the saddle and looks likely to return to winning ways.

CONCLUSION :- In spite of returning from a lengthy absence the highly regarded Dazzling Star is selected to return to the winner’s circle. Last outing winner Divine Power and the consistent Notting Hill look the main dangers.

Race No. 7 :- The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy – Class V – Distance :- 1400M

AQUARIUS :- Is an aged 6 year old gelding trained by M.K. Jadhav and to be ridden by A. Sandesh. He has had a total of 28 runs so far but only managed to gain his maiden success during the recent Pune campaign, in fact scoring back to back victories in his last 2 runs in Pune. He has run 4 times this season all in the higher class and has struggled to make an impression but now drops back down into Class V company and should be fit enough after 4 starts. A Sandesh returns to ride him, he finished on to be 4th over 1400M last time out and although taking on younger horses now, he is dangerous in this grade and looks to have an each way chance.

FELIX FELICIS :- Unexposed and lightly raced 4 year old filly trained by Vijay Kasbekar who scored an upset maiden victory over 1200M last time out and should not be troubled by the extra furlong. She has raced just 7 times so looks to have the ability to improve further and last time was probably the first time that she was seriously tried so she may have more to give. Her 4 ½ kilo penalty is practically offset by M. Ayyar’s 3 ½ kilo claim, she looks to have maintained her form since the last run and running in the same grade, she looks a very strong contender to repeat.

ANTARCTICA :- Another unexposed and untried 4 year old filly, this one from the yard of Altamash Ahmed, She made her debut as recently as January and has run thrice so far, looking to have made some improvement the last twice when finishing just outside the frame or thereabouts. 4th to Officer in Command over 1200M on her penultimate start, she again finished on over an inadequate 1000M to be 5th to Tasch last time out and this step up to 7 furlongs looks likely to suit. S.A. Amit here regular rider is in the saddle again today, she should improve further and looks to have an excellent chance to shed her maiden tag today.

DRAGONMOSS :- Exposed 5 year old handicapper trained by Adhirajsingh Jodha, he has managed to win just 1 of his 17 starts but has come back down to what looks a workable mark and just failed to score by a neck on reappearance with Romantic Eyes a close 3rd an additional neck away. He has had one run since, again running respectably to finish 4th to Poco Azul but Gandalf was 2nd that day and it looks hard to reverse that form on worse terms. P. Trevor is back in the saddle and he should be involved in proceedings but may find it hard to beat the younger horses.

HI HO SILVER :- Progressive looking 4 year old filly trained by Dallas Todywalla who has had just 6 starts so far and looks to have improved significantly this term. Finishing on late to be a fair 4th over 1200M on reappearance, she looked unlucky last time out in a similar contest when hemmed up on the rail at a crucial juncture and having to switch around runners and hit stride again, ending up a close 2nd to Saffron Flower. She looks likely to progress again, Neeraj Rawal takes the ride and if building on that last effort, she looks a strong fancy to open her account.

GANDALF :- Maiden 5 year old gelding trained by Asad Siddiqui who had been knocking on the door for quite some time and looks to be due for a win very soon. He has not run upto stcratch in his last 2 starts but had the inexperienced A. Prakash up last time out and A.S. Peter is a much more positive Jockey Booking. He had finished runner up on a number of occasions before that and is another who looks to have strong each way claims.

ROMANTIC EYES :- well bred 5 year old trained by Imtiaz Sait who is winless in 13 starts so far and has run 2 good races over this trip in 3 starts this term. Just failing to score in a 3 horse photo with Dragonmoss and Sweeping Move on reappearance, she flopped when upped to 2000M next time out but again ran with some promise when dropped to this trip last time out, finishing on late to be 5th behind Hi Ho Silver. Robbie Downey is back in the saddle replacing P. Trevor and she looks capable of striking and should be in the fray if she is in a galloping mood.

CONCLUSION :- A difficult finale to sort out but Hi Ho Silver was a shade unlucky to be blocked last time out and should be able to make amends today. The other unexposed 4 year old Antarctica shapes as a live danger while last outing winner Felix Felicis cannot be ignored either.
