The facts: Corolla Wild Horses are one of the several herds of free roaming horses that live on the coast of North Carolina.
The horses have fended for themselves for 400 years but a burst of development has eaten away at their grazing land and brought danger such as speeding vehicles, toxic garbage, and tourists.
The threats: The huge decline in this species has been attributed to a variety of causes, including hunting, military activities, climatic as well as habitat changes and competition with domestic livestock. The main threat to the reintroduced population is hybridisation with and the potential for disease transmission from domestic horses.
Habitat degradation and predation by wolves also threaten the population.
What is being done: Members of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund have fought a valiant battle to keep their herd of wild horses safe. They have built a fence across the island and herded the horses into what they hope is a safe refuge — far from all traffic.
