Farmers’ Market being inaugurated at the RWITC on Thursday 17th March

The Royal Western Indian Turf Club is a public space that has been enjoyed by generations of Mumbaikars, and embodies the rich and diverse spirit of the city, welcoming people from all walks of life to come & enjoy the beautiful outdoors. In an endeavour to play a larger leadership role in preserving and sustaining this space, the RWITC has adopted a cause that requires the support of every progressive Mumbaikar – the preservation of our city’s open spaces.

Basis this objective, the Tribe@Turf (T@T) Community was born. Its sole purpose is to preserve and promote the environmental sustainability of Mumbai city. With the full support of the RWITC, the physical space of the Mahalakshmi Racecourse has already started to become a meeting point for the Community. The community has also gathered force in the digital & social media space, with its own Facebook fanpage (tribe@turf) & Twitter handle (tribe_turf). A combination of online & on-ground events have already generated a ground swell that is growing daily.

The T@T Community is only 2 months old but within that short period of time it has already launched two unique initiatives: Caring@Turf which has so far raised over Rs 40 lacs for 3 large charities, and Music@Turf which treated the city to a first-of-its-kind music event, when the international 72-piece Symphony Orchestra of India opened its season with a performance on the lawns.

And now one of our most exciting initiatives comes to life under Organic@Turf when the Farmers’ Market debuts on its premises in March. The RWITC has partnered with Kavita Mukhi to create a space for not just farmers who produce organically certified fruits & vegetables, but have also included other practitioners of products & services that sustain the environment & culture of Mumbai City.

The Market will take place on the 17th & 24th (both Thu) of March, and on the 9th & 16th (both Sat) of April, and will run from 3pm-9pm. Additionally there will be entertainment provided at the venue including performances of dance & music. Kids too will have plenty of space to run around and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Vivek Jain, the Chairman of the RWITC says “This initiative comes under our newly created identity Tribe@Turf, which has been promoted to encourage non racing activities to focus on environment, green spaces, culture and music, to name a few, to establish the turf is a fun place to be and further RWITC’s image as an iconic, heritage landmark of our city. This is the second such innovative initiative after the Symphony on the Lawns, and we hope the Farmers’ Market, which is also a socially responsible Endeavour, is well patronized by our members and citizens of Mumbai.”

Kavita Mukhi, the initiator of the Farmers’ Market adds “What we are about to embark upon has never been done before - ORGANIC produce & a chance to watch the races, listen to music & engage in ORGANIC conversation over ORGANIC snacks under open skies. What a treat for Mumbaites, young & old! Support rural India, your health & the health of mother earth.”

Every Mumbaikar has a responsibility to the city, and in the spirit of this endeavor, each one is invited to join the Tribe@Turf Community and contribute their ideas, thoughts and points of view in helping to make this an exciting Community that is the pride of Mumbai and a joy for the entire city to behold! To sign up one must simply “like” the Fan page on Facebook (facebook.com/tribe.turf). Regular updates can be followed on Twitter as well (twitter.com/tribe_turf).

The long-term vision for the future is to create a strong Community that can collectively own and develop a piece of Mumbai in a sustainable manner for our children to inherit, and for us all to enjoy in the years to come!
