Mumbai: Queen filly Moonlight Romance has become highest stakes earning horse in Indian racing history.
The Cooji Katrak-trained 4-year-old scored a thrilling win in the Indian Turf Invitation Cup at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse last Sunday and grabbed the first prize of Rs 60 lakh to take her career earnings to Rs 3.59 crores from 10 starts.
Moonlight Romance thus went ahead of another great filly Jacqueline in terms of highest stakes winner. Jacqueline had won Rs 3.26 crores last Mumbai season after winning the Indian 1000 Guineas, Indian 2000 Guineas, Indian Oaks and Indian Derby. Southern Empire (2.55 cr), Xisca (2.4 cr) and Set Alight (2.2 cr) are among top five stakes earners in that order. Moonlight Romance achieved a unique place in the history of Indian racing last Sunday by achieving a rare feat of winning the Bangalore Derby, Indian Derby and Indian Turf Invitation Cup.
“I have verified this by the Indian Stud book and Moonlight Romance is now at the top of all time stakes earners,” said Vivek Jain, chairman, RWITC.
Moonlight Romance's record, however, may short live since the surge in prize money, especially the forecasted Indian Derby stakes to touch a new high, will see that her record could well be broken.
