FROM THE HORSES MOUTH - RACE FORM ANALYSIS GUIDE FOR SUNDAY, 19TH NOVEMBER 2017
- By Cyrus Naterwalla
Race No. 1 :- The UPL Limited Trophy – Class II – Distance :- 1000M
LADISLAUS :- Seasoned 4 year old sprinter from the S.K. Sunderji yard, he has a good record of 4 wins and 4 seconds from his 17 starts but he is usually more effective over 1200 and 1400M and will find this 5 furlongs on the sharp side in spite of the long Mumbai straight. The only time he has attempted 5 furlongs before was on his 2nd career start where he performed well going down fighting to Sparkling Eyes by a neck. He finished 7th in his last start over 1200M but that was in the higher class and he was victorious on his last attempt in Class II also over 1200M when he comfortably beat Governor General and Charging Tigress. He carries 61 kilos which is a disadvantage but has been reunited with P. Trevor. He is working well and looks to have a good chance to place but may find it hard to win.
GOLDIE’S PET :-She is a speedy 3 year old filly from the yard of Dallas Todywalla and has finished in the first two in 7 of her 9 starts till date, winning three of them. She has raced over both 5 and 6 furlongs and is most effective over this trip although she does stay 6 furlongs and all her 3 wins have come over the minimum distance. She comes into this race on the back of successive 5 furlong wins, having accounted for the speedy Wild Fire last time out in the lower class. She appears to be progressing nicely and in spite of being up a further 6 ½ kilos, she appears to have maintained her condition and with David Allan being a big boost in the saddle, she appears to be the one they all have to beat.
GOD’S OWN :- Another 3 year old speedster, this one from the yard of Narendra Lagad, she has won 4 of her 9 starts, also all over the minimum trip and did in fact complete a wonderful hattrick of wins in Pune before finding 6 furlongs stretching her last time out against the brilliant Ruffina, so she should relish this return to the minimum. She has won in this class already, clocking an excellent time of 0.57.42 seconds in the process so she must be respected and looks to be one of the main dangers with Dashrath Singh on board.
ANACAPRI :-Southern challenger who began her career in Kolkotta and has been travelling around the country since, has a good record of 4 wins from 7 starts till date although she too has done most of her racing over 6 furlongs. She has won each of her last 3 starts, one in Ooty and the last 2 in Bangalore so comes into this race in prime form. She is usually a front runner so may not mind the drop in trip to the minimum and she looks a very progressive sort. She has the in form Neeraj Rawal in the saddle and has bagged the prime No. 1 draw so is expected to try and dominate proceedings from the start and looks a very strong contender to gain her 4th straight success and get Pesi Shroff off to a good start.
DOMINATION :- Is a strong galloping 4 year old grey from the MaleshNarredu yard who was a decisive winner over Slam Dunk over 1400M on his last start and overall is a winner of 2 of his 15 races but has been in very good form of late. However, all his form has come over much longer trips and he is attempting this 5 furlongs for the first time in his career. He runs at a feather weight with Raghuveer Singh claiming 3 ½ kilos off his declared weight of 49 and although he should be doing all his best work in the closing stages, this is a very big ask against some real speedsters and he looks a rank outsider.
CONCLUSION :- This looks to be mainly between the speedy and progressive Goldie’s Pet who appears to have the strongest form and comes into this race bidding for a hattrick and having shown that she can win from off the pace as well which is a big plus and the out station challenger Anacapri who has also been very impressive in her last 3 starts, all over 6 furlongs and all start to finish victories. Perhaps the presence of David Allan in the saddle would tilt the scales slightly towards the former.
Race No. 2 :- The Rotary Club of Bombay Trophy – Class I – Distance :- 1400M
SHIP ROCK :-5 year old horse who has done most of his racing in Kolkotta and has an excellent 50% strike rate till date having won 6 of his 12 starts so far including his last 3 in a row at his home centre. He raced in Western India for the first time in Pune back in September over a mile where he made a good impression when finishing a close 3rd to Lucas and Exodus which appears to be solid form. He has been brought along steadily since then but is conceding weight to some top 3 year olds so although he is given a good each way chance with NeerajRawal in the saddle, he looks more of a place contender and may find one if not both of the Classic hopefuls to be too strong.
SUPER SUNSHINE :-Another 5 year old colt by Holy Roman Emperor, he is trained by MaleshNarredu and has alternated his racing between Mumbai and Bangalore and is a winner of 2 of his 13 runs till date. Both his wins have come on the Bangalore course, his maiden win over 6 furlongs and then in Class II over 7, and his form in Mumbai has been quite modest. He had his first run since April on the concluding weekend in Pune and ran satisfactorily to finish 3rd over 1200M to Nascar and Champagne. Super Sunshine will be ridden by Bhawani Singh but appears to be a huge outsider at best and nothing that he has done so far looks likely to trouble the two principals.
MYGRATOR :- 3 year old Classic Prospect from the Malesh Narredu yard, he gave indications of his class right from his debut when he was odds on favourite over 1400M but was worn down late in the day by Manifold. He ran a below par race in the Juvenile Colts championship but has not looked back since and has won 4 successive races in the recent Pune season to be a strong candidate for horse of the season. His last win came over this trip where many deemed him a shade fortunate to beat New England in receipt of weight but he has been going from strength to strength with every run and looks at the top of his game at present. Suraj Narredu will be up today instead of his regular rider P.S. Chouhan and this looks his lead up for the Indian 2000 Guineas so a big run is anticipated and he can upset Ruffina if she is slightly off her game.
RUFFINA :- The leading 3 year old of her generation in her juvenile season where she rattled off 3 wins in a row culminating in a glorious victory in the Poonawalla Million back in March but her Pune season was hampered by a setback and a persistent cough and she reappeared as late as October over 1200M where she gave a workmanlike performance to hold off Free Speech by a length. That run suggested to many that she was far from being back to her best but she was understandably rusty and SurajNarredu did not appear to be flat out on her that day so she is clearly entitled to improve. She faces a very stiff test against a top drawer colt in Mygrator before going on to tackle the fillies in the Indian 1000 Guineas and she is reunited with her regular partner David Allan who has flown down especially to ride. She would still be a confident selection here but must win impressively if she is to have a say in the Guineas
CONCLUSION :-The brilliant unbeaten Ruffina is a confident selection to maintain her unbeaten record and improve from her last run and win this convincingly enroute to her date with the Indian 1000 Guineas. Any chinks in her armour will be exploited by Mygrator a quality colt in his own right who comes into this in prime form. It is very hard to see the race going out of the grasp of this pair
Race No. 3 :- The Janak Ram Jethmalani Memorial Trophy – Class III – Distance :- 1600M
GLORIOUS EYES :- 4 year old filly trained by ImtiazSait, she has managed to win 2 of her 15 starts till date but it has been 6 runs since her last win and although she has placed on a number of occasions, she appears to be in the handicapper’s grip at present. She likes to come from off a strong pace and last time out tackling 2000M for the first time, she finished on nicely to be 2nd to Zenon with Jager Bomb back in 4th that day. She has been working well of late and has C.S. Jodha in the saddle so she merits each way consideration but again is taking on some progressive 3 year olds whom she has to concede weight too so she looks more likely to fight it out for the minor honours.
TURNING POINT :-3 year old Surfrider filly from the yard of S.K. Sunderji, she has run 5 times till date, finishing runner up in her last 2 starts in Pune and there is a suspicion that she was not seen at her best in either of those starts. Prior to that she had finished on to be 3rd to We Break The Rules over 1400M, beaten a length and conceding 5 ½ kilos so she appears closely matched with that rival again today. What could possibly be in her favour is that she gets a weight respite today, having carried heavy imposts in her last 3 starts and P. Trevor is back in the saddle after a while now. Her preparatory work has been excellent and she looks one of the main contenders here and should get back to winning ways.
EIGER’S TIGER :- Is an inconsistent and exposed 4 year old handicapper trained by Narendra Lagadwho was knocking at the door for a while throughout the Pune season and finally gained an overdue success over a mile last time out with Irises back in 4th that day, beaten about 1 ¾ lengths. His penalty and the higher grade will make life tougher for him to confirm the form with Irises plus he is taking on some promising 3 year olds so although Dashrath Singh is booked to ride and he comes into the race in good form, he too looks likely to fight it out for the places and winning looks tough.
TAKE FIVE :- Promising 3 year old filly from the yard of Malesh Narredu she has plenty of scope to improve and after a couple of disappointing efforts in Pune, restored her connections’ confidence with a fluent maiden win last time out over 1400M. After making her debut over a mile in Bangalore, she was a firm favourite over 1200M on her first run in Pune but struggled in the early part and the penny dropped very late in the contest, as she motored home and was only just denied by Bunting. She then looked very flat next time out also over 1200M when beaten by lesser fancied stable mate Victoriana and ending only 3rd to Gallant Knight. Upped to 1400M for her handicap debut, she proved too strong for her older rivals and scored a fluent maiden victory which no doubt will have given her some confidence. Although Turning Point appears to have slightly stronger form, Take Five has been working very well since the win and with SurajNarredu to guide her, looks to have an excellent chance for a quick encore.
WE BREAK THE RULES :- The last 3 year old in the field, he is a full brother to Whomakestherules and although nowhere close to his brother on performance, has developed into a useful sort, with one win and four places from 7 starts. He beat Turning Point into 3rd when winning his maiden over 1400M in Pune and is closely matched with her on that run and then went on to finish a good 3rd to Lord Grantham over 1800M where he was staying on late and got hampered barely a few strides from the post. He was outclassed in the Pune Derby last time out when finishing only 8th and well beaten but this should be decidedly easier and he may appreciate the drop back to a mile. He too has been working well and although he appears to lack the scope of Take Five and Turning Point, he comes in well on the handicap and is dangerous to ignore with Neeraj Rawal getting the leg up today.
IRISES :- 4 year old filly from the yard of AdhirajsinghJodha, she was an impressive pillar to post winner on her debut and was quite highly regarded by her young trainer but apparently suffered a setback after that win and has been slowly finding her way back since then. She needed a lung opener on her first run back from a break in Pune and looked to have improved on her subsequent run when leading for a long way before retiring to be a close 4th to Eiger’s Tiger. She still appears to have the scope to improve if she can build on that last effort and she looks likely to be able to dominate again today so off bottom weight, she looks an interesting outsider and could steal the race from the front if she is allowed to dictate on her terms.
CONCLUSION :-Turning Point did not appear to run upto her best in her Pune campaign and is just preferred to Take Five with Trevor Patel returning to take the ride. The latter is a very strong danger while the other 3 year old We Break The Rules has a handicap chance. Bottom weighted Irises is an interesting outsider who could go well at a price
Race No. 4 :- The Smt. Sarla and Rtn. Girdharilal Modi & Rotary Club of Mumbai Downtown Sealand Trophy – Class IV – Distance :- 1400M
GLYNDEBOURNE :-3 year old Western Aristocrat filly from the stables of Vishal Gaikwad, she too does not quite appear to have lived upto expectations till date and has won just once in 5 starts, that win coming on debut when she looked soft and unprepared but showed a good attitude to get the better of the fitter looking Perfect Star. However, she ran well below par in the Breeders Produce Stakes when only 6th behind Tutankhamun and her 3 runs in Pune, although better have still been disappointing. She finished runner up to Caprisca in receipt of 3 kilos on her reappearance there with We Break The Rules back in 3rd so his run should give some pointers to the form. She was then a modest 3rd to Rochester and Summer Rays in the F.D. Wadia and last time out ended 5th to Domination in a Class III contest albeit not beaten very far. She is eased into the lower class now but has to concede weight all around so although P. Trevor has been booked to ride today and she is working well, she may find one or two too good today. Each way contender.
IN THE STARS :- Full sister to Holy Smoke, she looked a very exciting prospect when making an impressive winning debut over 1200M back in Pune a month ago, winning stylishly and clocking a fast time in the process with the same rider on board. She is sure to improve significantly for that run and strip fitter and looks to have been allotted a reasonable mark for her handicap debut. She has been working extremely well of late and looks likely to take her chances in the Indian 1000 Guineas if she wins this well. She looks a leading contender her and must be seriously respected.
FOREST FAIRY :- Another well bred and lightly raced Classic hopeful, this one hailing from the stables of BezanChenoy, she has run well in each of her 4 starts, finishing third once second twice and winning over this trip on her penultimate start. She has finished 2nd to two good horses in Benefactor and Daffodils and last time out too, finished a good close 3rd to Big Sur in a bunched finish in a mile in Class III. She too has been eased in grade and the booking of Y.S. Srinath catches the eye. She is another who has caught the eye in the morning gallops and looks a very strong fancy to return to the winner’s circle, if she able to reproduce her excellent track work.
ANGELS TOUCH :-Has a nice pedigree by Excellent Art out of Indian 1000 Guineas runner up Lady Moura and appears one of the better prospects from the stable of Karthik G. She showed good promise in her 3rd start when finishing 3rd to Themis and Manifold in the Breeders Juvenile Fillies but then went on to run poorly in the Bangalore Summer and is having her first start since July. She is still lightly raced so has the scope to improve but looks likely to need this outing. Bhawani Singh in on board and she could be out for an airing before tacking sterner opposition next time out.
SASSY LASS :- Thrice raced 3 year old maiden from the small yard of Asad Siddiqui, she has run with promise on every occasion and was very heavily fancied last time out over 1200M but could not get the better of Sereno and ended up a well held 2nd. Her form till date has been relatively modest although she has been working impressively for some time now and she makes her handicap debut off a reasonable mark. Dashrath Singh is a rare booking for the yard suggesting that connections are quite strong but although she does merit consideration, she looks to be taking on potentially classy types and is more likely to fill one of the minor berths.
CONCLUSION :-In The Stars is selected to fulfil the promise of her impressive maiden win and score here enroute to better things. Forest Fairy is likely to give her the most to do and is the form choice while the top weighted Glyndebourne should not be ignored either.
Race No. 5 :- The Smt. Padam and Rtn. Darshan Chaddha, A. Chaddha Family Charities and Rotary Club of Mumbai Downtown Sealand Trophy – Class IV – Distance :- 1000M
RENATO :- Well bred gelding from the MaleshNarredu yard who made his racing debut just 3 weeks ago as a 4 year old but showed a good attitude to score an emphatic maiden win over 1200M with SurajNarredu in the saddle. He was well prepared for the win that day so may not improve substantially but if he can make even normal progression on that run then he looks likely to take a lot of beating. He drops slightly in trip down to the minimum and has a 7 ½ kilo penalty to deal with which is quite stiff and he is conceding weight all around. He is a half brother to the likes of Perfect Star and Rosalind so has a smart pedigree and may yet be ahead of the handicapper. He is strongly fancied to succeed again and is one to stay on the right side of .
ART DECO :-Speedy 4 year old filly trained by Dallas Todywalla who lost her way somewhat after the last Pune season and has been slowly working her way back into form since then. She finished 5th in her last start suggesting that she was coming back into form and after rookie riders being declared for her last few starts, P. Trevor has been booked today suggesting that connections are fancying their chances. She still has something to prove but has been working well and could bounce back if she has come back to her best so much come into consideration .
RIDGEWOOD STAR :-Stable companion of Art Deco who is owned and trained by Dallas Todywalla, he seemed to find form when dropped to sprinting and scored a fluent maiden success on this course last March when easily accounting for Adam’s Beginning in the lower class. He needed a couple of lung openers in Pune to get back into form but ran well again on his penultimate start when runner up to Elysee over this trip and should hold Touch Me Not who ran 3rd that day on that form. Neeraj Rawal has been booked to ride, he looks in good nick at present and is expected to run well and figure in the frame .
ASCENSION :- Speedy 3 year old filly from the S.K. Sunderji yard, she kept finding one or two too good in sprint maidens and was becoming very frustrating to follow but finally gained a much overdue maiden win on her 7th start when she easily beat Stunner and Malavika over this trip. She then followed that up with a faraway 3rd on her handicap debut where she was no match for Lincoln but finished on well to save place money. There does not appear anything of that quality in this field today so she should give a good account of herself but has been unfortunate to bag a very wide draw in Stall 13 which may hamper her chances. C.S. Jodha takes the ride and she is another worth considering each way in this competitive event .
TOUCH ME NOT :-3 year old filly from the Narendra Lagad yard, she has won 1 of her 7 starts and showed good improvement over sprints in this recent Pune season. After finishing a faraway 3rd to Loire and Stunner, she scored a battling maiden victory over Arc Shine and La Motte although the odds on favourite Sereno ran well below par that day. She went on to run a good 3rd just behind Ridgewood Star next time out but looks held by that rival and will find it hard to confirm the form and last time out she finished a long way behind Ascension. She has Dashrath Singh in the saddle and could fight it out for the minor places .
PRICELESS GIRL :-5 year old mare who is owned and trained by C. Rajendra, Priceless Girl has raced only 7 times till date and has shown good improvement in her last 2 starts. She showed zest for racing when finishing 3rd to Rich N Rare and Super Icon over 1200M when returning from a break on her reappearance in August and then returned from another short break in October to score a smart pillar to post maiden success over this trip, easily accounting for Grappa and Adele. She seems to have been kept fresh by her Trainer as there are no recent workouts but she could very well have come to hand now. Raghuveer Singh claims a valuable 3 ½ kilos which halves her penalty and she could well trouble them all again today.
CONCLUSION :-Renato looks a classy type and should be able to win this if he can progress from his impressive debut effort. The consistent Ascension and the unexposed Priceless Girl appear to be the main dangers
Race No. 6 :- The Rotary Club of Bombay Bayview Trophy – Class III – Distance :- 1200M
LINCOLN :-3 year old Excelebration gelding from the Pesi Shroff yard, he has an excellent record over 1000M with his solitary start over 1400M being the Poonawalla Breeders Multimillion where he led into the straight before weakening. He returned from a long absence and ran promisingly when chasing home Wild Fire back in September and showed the benefit of that run last time out when outclassing the opposition with a whipless apprentice up, racing wide and drifting right out in the straight but still winning by a decisive margin. He does not look likely to be troubled by the step up to this trip and Y.S. Srinath has been booked to ride. He looks a very progressive sort on paper and is a leading fancy to win this.
MAKINO :- Solid and consistent 4 year old handicapper from the yard of AdhirajsinghJodha, Makino has won 3 of his 15 starts till date and looked to be in good form during the Pune season. He began with a smart 6 furlong win on the opening day and then after 2 average efforts, ran a cracker over 1400M last time out when finishing a close 2nd to Mygrator. He brings strong form to the table, has been working very well of late suggesting he has maintained his condition and with NeerajRawal booked to ride, he looks a strong each way prospect who should almost certainly place.
JUGGERNAUT :- Typical tough Narendra Lagad trained 3 year old handicapper, he appeared to be all about speed and won his first 2 starts over 1000M but then showed he had the ability to stay 6 furlongs as well on his penultimate start, where he got the better of Miss Moneypenny and Jarama to score with the same rider up. He ran poorly next time out when upped to 7 furlongs but now returns to this 6 and looks to have an each way chance again with Dashrath Singh retaining the ride .
ELYSEE :- Tiny 3 year old filly from the S.K. Sunderji yard but she clearly has ability and has run well in her 6 race career so far, winning twice and making the frame on all but one occasion. After being pipped by Juggernaut over 1000M on her seasonal reappearance she returned from a short break and showed a neat turn of foot when hold up tactics were employed to return to winning ways in impressive fashion. C.S. Jodha takes over from R. Ajinkya in the saddle today, she too has been working well and looks a strong challenged to Lincoln with whom she is closely matched on their 2 year old form.
SHAOQING :-Altaf Hussain trained 4 year old filly who looked a promising prospect, winning 2 of her first 4 starts, both wins over this trip before suffering a minor setback from which she has been slowly recovering. Her last couple of runs over 1000M with a whipless apprentice up have been quite suggestive that she is regaining lost form, last time out finishing on pleasingly to be 3rd to Goldie’s Pet over 1000M. Raghuveer Singh has been booked to ride today and she looks an interesting outsider and could spring a surprise if she makes further progress.
LADY SERGEANT :- 3 year old filly from the yard of S.S. Shah who has reduced his string quite noticeably in the last few seasons but she looks one of the more promising ones from the yard and has already won twice from her 7 starts and built up some useful form in defeat. She was an impressive winner over 1200M on her penultimate start over this trip back in September but then ran poorly over 7 furlongs next time out where she finished well beaten. She could have been freshened up over the short break and the booking of P. Trevor is encouraging. She could prove to be a danger to all from the bottom of the weights
CONCLUSION :-This looks quite competitive on paper and although Lincoln is the obvious first choice, he may not have it quite so easy as last time. Elysee and Makino both look very real dangers as does the bottom weighted Lady Sergeant
Race No. 7 :- The Kamal Foundation & Rotary Club of Mumbai Malabar Hill Trophy – Class V – Distance :- 1200M
ALLEGRIA :- Is a 4 year old filly trained by Zadmal Singh who is still a maiden after 6 runs but showed some promising form on a couple of starts in between including over 1400M when dropped into this grade back in March and finishing a close 3rd to Kiss From A Rose. Her last couple of runs have been disappointing but she has been eased in grade now and Raghuveer Singh takes a valuable 3 ½ kilos off. She has been working reasonably well and should be considered each way in spite of top weight.
MOONSHINE :- Thrice raced 3 year old filly from the yard of Karthik G she has been making gradual improvement with each of her runs and on her solitary start in Pune over 1200M she finished on leisurely to be a faraway 3rd to Gazino. She has been brought along steadily since then and after 3 runs with an ordinary rider, Y.S. Srinath has been booked to ride today so connections must fancy their chances. She is an unknown quantity who has the potential to tackle this field but a paddock check is advised to ascertain her well being.
LILAC TIME :- 4 year old filly from the Narendra Lagad stable who has been working well for quite some time now but has not yet reproduced it on the race track as yet although she did run fairly well over 1400M last time out with Dashrath Singh up when finishing 3rd to Take Five. Dashrath is up again today and she may not have given off her best as yet so she is worth keeping an eye on and could pop up at any time.
FOREVER FREE :- Inconsistent 4 year old filly trained by Arif Patel, she has run 9 times till date and showed some promise over 1400M back in September where she ran a forward race throughout and kicked on to finish runner up to Vitesse. She ran poorly over 1400M next time out but then finished on late to be just outside the frame last time out with the same rider up and may possibly be suited by this additional furlong. D.S. Daman retains the ride and she is capable of springing a surprise if she is in a galloping mood.
YUTAKA :- Untried 3 year old gelding from the S.K. Sunderji yard, he has been brought down skilfully in the scale with a string of unplaced efforts and showed some zest for racing last time out on handicap debut when running a forward race and finishing 6th to Lady Sergeant but beaten only 4 ¼ lengths which was a big step up from his previous runs. He has been showing out well in the morning trials since then, has been eased in grade into the lowest class and C.S. Jodha has been booked to ride. He could be potentially well treated at present and if looking well in the paddock, may well be good enough to win.
CONCLUSION :-An open looking finale. A chance can be taken on the hitherto untried Yutaka who has been working well, looks on a decent mark and has a good rider up for the first time today. Moonshine with Y.S. Srinath up and Lilac Time are also worthy of consideration.
