It is said that there is nothing like winning a Derby. Those who have experienced it will testify to this and when seeking comparisons, it's like winning Wimbledon, or the Monaco GP, or even like scoring the winning goal or runs in a World Cup final.
These are rare and special moments in a lifetime and nowhere is this rarity more exacting than in the Derby .
This year is the 75th running and looks to be a three horse affair. Serjeant At Arms' story is a fascinating one. He was passed over by some as he was considered small when young. This has proved costly and on the track however, he has demonstrated a scintillating burst of speed earning him the tag of `best miler in India'.
The Derby however, is 800 metres longer and he will be tested by two fillies. One who comes from the stable of last year's winner, and the second, from Pesi Shroff 's.
The Kingfisher Ultra Derby is presented by Signature packaged water and is a day when around 30,000 people will flock to the Mahalaxmi Racecourse. This year promises to be more spectacular than ever kicking off with racing under floodlights and a Lucky Ali concert on Saturday, February 4, followed by the Derby on Sunday which will host an internationally curated opening ceremony.
While it will take all of two minutes and thirty seconds for history to be written and a new champion to be crowned, the celebrations will last for much longer. Many will tell tales of how the race was won and lost and the winner will be written into turf folklore. This is after all, the Derby. A day synonymous with style, speed and even romance and passion. The Derby is the ultimate badge of honour and for all who are part of it, it is, more than just a race.
