Witness the Christmas spirit at the picturistic and festive Mahalaxmi racecourse

Looking for a way to kick-start your Christmas spirit? It is in the air and it’s time to drive down to the Mahalaxmi racecourse to start celebrating. The unique Christmas spirit here is irresistible. This Sunday brings the best of both worlds, the 64th running of the Grade 2 Maharaja Sir Harisinghji Gold Trophy, a high profile race backed by the family of late Maharaja and the festive carnival. When all the action is happening at the racecourse, it’s time to come, unwind and to soak up the wonderful atmosphere as the afternoon promises to have an action packed race card with the running of three other important races, the Municipal Commissioner’s Trophy, the N. M. Irani Trophy and the Uttam Singh Trophy. The latter, a legend at 97, has dedicated seven decades of his lifetime to the sport of horse racing in the capacity of a jockey and subsequently as a trainer, where he won the Indian Oaks seven times and the 1000 Guineas six times.

The Maharaja Sir Harisinghji Gold Trophy race is a perfect illustration of the Royal Family of Jammu and Kashmir’s longtime involvement in equestrian sports at Mumbai’s magnificent jewel in the crown. A link that began as early as 1953, when Maharaja Sir Harisinghji had the first running of this race during his lifetime with the presentation of a silver trophy that was so intricately engraved, one that had a stamp of timeless elegance. This race is a true example of the values that the late Maharaja strived to represent, wherein horse racing was always a sophisticated affair, reflecting the traditions and nobility of the rich and the famous. The running of this exceptional race is the first of many milestones in a long history between the family of late Maharaja Sir Harisinghji and horse racing on the luscious green racetracks at the Mahalaxmi racecourse, a legacy that they are keen to take forward. On this momentous day, we are proud to welcome his grandson Maharaj Kumar Ajatshatru Singh with his wife Kuwarani Ritu Singh and their children Rajkumari Adishree Singh and Rajkumar Ranvijay Singh here to present the trophy.

This picturistic racecourse is not only an iconic part of history of this city, but also a living, changing experience with a wealth of horse racing and cultural events held almost throughout the year. Christmas day is a time to celebrate with some festive cheer and what better way to do that than to have fun with friends and family, get involved in watching the thoroughbreds live in action as they are romping home, witness the colour of which racehorse owner flies high and enjoy what Mahalaxmi racecourse has to offer in what would be a fitting and charming end to the year.
