On the surface at least, the first day of the Mumbai racing season drew in a large attendance which was truly remarkable. The Rotarians went out of their way to make this day a real success with 10,000+ of them and their friends coming together. The member’s enclosure was filled with some anxious betters whilst the others got absorbed in shopping in the flea market and nibbling on gourmet bites at the various food stalls that were set up over the weekend. The unveiling of the largest horseshoe in the Guineas book of records was another first of its type at the Mahalaxmi racecourse.

Shortly after this, the eminent lawyer Mr. Ram Jethmalani graced the racecourse to give away the winning trophy in a race that has been framed in his son Janak Ram Jethmalani’s name. It was an emotional moment for the veteran to hold back his emotions even as he spoke on how he got over 90% of his grief of losing his son when he embarked a flight from Delhi to Mumbai with a mixed bag of emotions in the afternoon and got absorbed in reading a book, ‘Dying to be me’ a best seller based on a real life story that he picked up at the airport where the Hong Kong based author Anita Moolrajani, a cancer victim was battling for life and suddenly emerged a winner by getting a second lease of life. The lady had the ability to control her pain and fight back, setting her depression aside to concur the world once again to lead a normal life. And so she did, miraculously and with panache. It was a rare opportunity to hear him talk extempore to the public and with the media as he was entertaining and informative.
