Stylish closure to a grand Mumbai Season
By Vivek Jain
The 43 day Mumbai Racing Season, spanning a little over five months, and filled with quality racing all the way, comes to a “stylish” closure this weekend with Stylecracker once again partnering the RWITC to bring the curtains down with a cracker of a weekend.
It is rare for the final weekend to have an AC tent, a virtual carnival of shops and food and drink aplenty. The highlight will be the Borough Playground, powered by none other than Disney, to feature a huge range of activities for kids, including a petting zoo and a live performance of the theme song from Beauty and the Beast, and discounted tickets for the play. To top up a grand closure will be a juvenile Multi Million, sponsored by the House of Tata, as credible a name as any to associate with the RWITC.
In a brief attempt to highlight the distinctive features of the season, I list the following worthy of mention:
-
The immensely successful conduct of the Asian Racing Conference;
-
A power packed Asian Racing Day with four international sponsors and the presence of Princess Zahra Khan;
-
The first ever co branded Indian Derby with the full prize money with the RWITC successfully staving off the threat of withdrawal by USL;
-
The huge splash by the introduction of Evening Racing for nearly 20 race days;
-
The innovative Club Day with the participation of eight premium Clubs of the city;
-
The first ever Ivy League Day at the Races with association of the premium US Universities;
-
RWITC Cares with the Lions Day and Indian Cancer Race Day and other charitable associations;
-
Festival Days with Stylecracker, Eat India and the Indo German Christmas Fest and the Worli Festival;
-
Media days with G2, Hello , Forbes and Mid Day;
-
Champions Race Day,with three Group races and two Millions as part ofFabulous February
-
Amazing April where each weekend featured evening racing and several were topped up with festivals;
-
The hugely creative and popular Prithvi Fest in an amphitheater on the lawns for a week long theatre treat;
-
Bollywood at the Races: With Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan watching the Indian Derby in the patrol car!
-
Screening of T20 and IPL matches on race days on big screens to add to the experience;
-
Record graded races/ multi millions/ millions/ sponsored races;
-
The Launch of Lynn Deas’ outstandingly curated coffee table book on racing
That’s quite an impressive show for one season and it’s au revoir till we meet again in Pune!
