Sena's racecourse park pitch panned
Times News Network
The Bombay high court lamented the loss of open spaces in the city on Wednesday , and the Shiv Sena was quick to make the most of it in the BMC on Thursday . It renewed its demand for a “theme park“ at the Mahalaxmi racecourse in a letter to municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta -and invited criticism from activists and citizens.
Citing the HC opservations, the letter by BMC Shiv Sena leader Trushna Vishwasrao demanded the racecourse be developed on the lines of Central Park in NY.
Rishi Agarwal, a citizen activist, called it an opportunistic move by the Shiv Sena.
“There are several other things that can be done to improve the open space ratio of the city and yet the Shiv Sena is narrowly looking at only turning the racecourse into a park,“ he said. “The racecourse should be preserved the way it is considering the heritage value it boasts of.“
An activist, Nikhil Desai, said the BMC spent crores on parks but often items were bought at inflated prices.
Vivek Jain, media and marketing chief of the RWITC, said the club already maintains a park which several municipal school children and elders access.
“Apart from it, there is also a jogging and walking track, which is open to all,“ Jain said. “There is no reason why the racecourse and park cannot co-exist.“
