RWITC’s Juggernaut of big days continues on Champions Day
By Vivek Jain

With the Asian Racing Conference and Indian Derby safely under its belt, one would have thought RWITC would take a well deserved breather. But its juggernaut of big events continues relentlessly with Champions Day billed for Sunday. A concept started at Ascot in the UK, Champions Day features a range of top races on one afternoon, which will make it qualitatively one of the best of the season.

Three graded races- The Dr S C Jain Sprinters’ and The Byramjee Jeejebhoy Eclipse Stakes, both Grade 2, and The R N Kanga, a Grade 3, will see the top older horses clash over a sprint, middle distance and staying trips-all one day , and all trials for the Invitation Cup races in a few weeks and the results of which influence the nominations.  The Dr S C Jain Sprinters’ is named after one of RWITC’s longest serving Chairmen and several of its past winners have gone on to win The Sprinters’ Cup and The Eclipse Stakes is a race steeped in history and one of the most valued prizes of the Indian Turf and which appears to be at the mercy of the great Quasar.

But there is much more to whet the appetite. The Mid Day Trophy always attracts a Bollywood superstar, and this year will be no exception, with a glamorous  A-lister slated to do the honours.  Then we have the Dr Jagjit Singh Million, named after the legendary Ghazal King and a great racing aficionado, topped off by the first running of The Design One Million, supported by Sahachari Foundation, whom the RWITC supports in its charitable objectives. And whose recent exhibition at our Club drew thousands of women to our venue.

Being Valentine’s Day, there will be themed prizes linked for the first time to a contest that tests  one’s creative skills rather than winner spotting ability and a live band will give the day a special flair, that has now become the hallmark of most Sunday’s at the RWITC. And Fantastic February continues with The Club Day at the Races and the Poonawalla Multi Million, to prove yet again, that we do it best!
