Mumbai:
Regal filly Myrtlewood may earn a king's ransom of Rs 72,540 per stride if she wins the most prestigious crown in the life of a thoroughbred in India.
The prize money on offer for the winner of the Kingfisher Ultra India Derby this Sunday is a mind-numbing Rs 2,17,62,000 out of the total prize money of Rs 3.63 crore, a record for any individual sporting event in the country .
The Pesi Shroff-schooled filly is one of the strong contenders for the blue riband event after romping home in the Villoo Poonawalla Indian Oaks, covering the 2400-metre trip in two minutes 30.72 seconds. If she manages a similar feat to triumph in the Indian Derby (which is also run over 2400 metres, or a mile and a half), then her two strides in each second will be worth Rs 1,45,080 which translates into a jaw-dropping Rs 72,540 per stride! There is no reason to doubt Myrtlewood's ability . Many felt that she may not stay the distance of 2400 metres in the Indian Oaks on January 24, which resulted in her being available at 18/10 in the ring. History has been full of instances where class has trampled over all obstacles like form and stamina.
Myrtlewood not only proved that she was up to the task, she also kept on widening the margin of her victory. Many still believe that the opposition she beat in the Indian Oaks was mediocre. There is no doubt, however, that she won like an Indian Derby winner. She was lying second last before turning for the homestretch but once her rider P S Chouhan took her outside on a clear path, the Usha Stud-bred filly flew pasther rivals.
This Mehernosh Deboo-owned filly though could face stiff challenge from colts, Costa Del Sol and Phoenix Tiger.
