Ladies Derby to Showcase Sunday’s Racing

If last Sunday was the Marathon that swept Mumbai, it will be another great day for sport this weekend. The RWITC brings you the Ladies’ Derby, the HDIL sponsored Indian Oaks (Gr.1), to its turf, on what promises to be a spectacular day of racing.

With a record 7.5 million purse on offer, the mile and a half classic, India’s richest prize reserved exclusively for fillies, appears to be a match between India’s two most talented equine females- Moonlight Romance and Siachen who gave a rousing finish to the Indian 1,000 Guineas (Gr.1) a month back. In keeping with Ladies’ Day, the off track action promises to match that in front of the stands. Egyptian belly dancers will gyrate in the air conditioned tent, and a Russian acrobat troupe will add to the entertainment quotient for the day. And the ever successful mantra of prizes gets a fillip with the Hyundai i10 to be won in a contest. And with the gentlemen in formals, the ladies are bound to be impressed as class comes to grass!

HDIL, sponsors of this year’s Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend, continue their association with the Oaks and have ensured their unmistakable stamp as one of RWITC’s most prestigious sponsors. The day is replete with top class racing, food and leisure and fits into a carnival theme we have been trying to bring to the fraternity week after week. The added attraction this year will be the Grade 3 Gool S.Poonawalla Million, which has been shifted from its usual early April running to Oaks Day, as the perfect appetiser to the big race.

Last Sunday was a tremendous success with two first time sponsors to the Club walking the extra mile to bring a high profile day of sport and fun. Club Med capped their Million with a blinding trapeze act at sundown and Sahaan celebrated their debut with a high visibility event, with fashion models and salsa dancers thrown in for good measure. This is just what Western India racing needs- enthusiastic corporates bringing a new audience to the sport.

It is going to be action packed month ahead for the Club, as racing picks up several gears as the momentum builds up to the mammoth McDowell Signature Indian Derby Weekend, now just a sniffing distance away.

The Oaks Day goes live on ET NOW from 3pm- 6pm.
