With the successful dress rehearsal of racing under lights on Thursday evening, the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) is all set to write a new chapter in Indian horse racing by organising the first-ever night racing trials this weekend.
A programme of nine races has been planned for Cambay Tiger-sponsored Sundown Racing on Saturday evening with the last three races scheduled to be held under lights at 7.15, 7.45 and 8.15 pm. The first race of the evening will start at 4pm.
With the jockeys and trainers of the two mock races held on Thursday giving a positive feedback about the lights and the horses’ behavior under it, RWITC officials are confident about the success of the big evenings planned.
“Yesterday's mock races successfully addressed all our concerns. The trainers and jockeys are very happy about the arrangements and are satisfied with the quality and intensity of lights and racing conditions. All safety parameters have been addressed and now we look forward to the weekend and creating history,“ said RWITC committee member Ram Shroff, a key person behind the historic attempt.
Race goers too are thrilled with the prospect of experiencing racing under lights. “I was present during the dress rehearsal. It was fascinating. I am planning to bring my entire family to experience what should be a great outing for them at the picturesque Mahalaxmi Racecourse,“ said Sudhanshu Jha, a regular punter from Mulund.
