Bold Majesty set for late effort

Bold Majesty, who won the Bangalore Winter Derby last Sunday, has arrived at Mahalaxmi to take part in the Indian Derby this Sunday. To race him over a gruelling distance of 2400 metres within seven days may be a tough decision but his owner, the legendary MAM Ramaswamy, has not only taken a big gamble but also paid a whopping sum of over Rs 10 lakh (including taxes) as late fees to let Bold Majesty have a tilt at the blue riband of Indian racing.
But what prompted Ramaswamy to also bring Bold Majesty to Mumbai when his other entrant Be Safe, considered the best horse in the country at the moment, is already a clear favourite to win the big race?
“After Bold Majesty's thumping success in the Mysore and Bangalore Derbys, my boss thought that the gelding deserves a chance to try and win the Indian Derby. He believes in giving all his horses a fair chance,” Bold Majesty's trainer Subaiah Ganapathy told TOI.
The 62-year-old Ganapathy is Ramaswamy's exclusive trainer and has won two Indian Derby crowns with Southern Regent (2005) and Diabolical (2007) apart from having won over 950 races, including 90 Classics in a span of 14 years since securing his trainer's licence in 2000. His son Karthik trains Ramaswamy's horses based in Mumbai.
Ganapathy also feels that Be Safe is a safe bet for the Indian Derby. “He is clearly the best contender but this doesn't mean that Bold Majesty should not be given a chance to try his luck,” said the veteran trainer.
The shrewd trainer knows that the longer Bold Majesty stays in Mumbai the better as after the Derby, there is the Invitation weekend early in March. There will be many races that can be targeted if Bold Majesty acclimatises well with conditions here.
