It is perhaps apt that the The Indian Oaks, contested only by fillies, and widely recognised as the Ladies' Derby, be sponsored as a tribute to Villoo Poonwalla, Cyrus Poonawalla's wife, who passed away in 2010.
A zestful lady, Villoo was a regular at the racecourse as a skilled rider, passionate about horse racing, till her health permitted. She was often seen leading winners of classic events which raced in the Poonawalla colours.
Poonawalla remembers his wife as being the inspiration behind the famed Poonawalla Stud Farm. Those who knew Villoo recollect her as a benevolent lady, who kept a low profile when going about transforming the lives of the needy. No wonder then that she was looked upon as a mother figure by her staff members and their families.
