If the rain gods are kind to the Royal Western India Turf Club, horseracing will return to the Mahalaxmi racecourse today and, as usual, it will be packed with many firsts; some history-making events; and a few record-breaking figures. The biggest attraction this season will be the Indian Derby and the Poonawalla Breeders' Multi Million but adding glamour to this year's racing will be the Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend. Meanwhile, the club could not have hoped to start the season on a better note as RWITC chairman Vivek Jain accompanied by actor Rahul Bose and some school children brought PM Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to the club's premises. A small section of the racecourse was cleaned the racing fraternity will hope that it's not end of this exercise but it would inspire the club and its administration to widen the scope of this cleanliness drive.

RICH STAKES

The prize-money offered during the five and-half month racing season gets a big boost due to the three Invitation weekend races taking the stakes to a record 24 crore rupees though it falls short of the expectation of the owners association.

In keeping with the club's tradition, this year the RWITC has dedicated no less than three new individual racing events to the memories its eminent members like India's former Attorney General Dr Goolam Essaji Vahanvati (22nd Feb. 2015), Dr Gobind Ram Gurbuxani (15th Feb. 2015) and Ibrahim Rahimtoola (4th Jan. 2015) who passed away recently.
