Open classics, close elections
By Vivek Jain I TOI
THOUGH the Deltin Casinos sponsored Indian 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas will bring racing at the Mahalaxmi into top gear, it is the annual elections to the RWITC Committee on Tuesday, sandwiched between these two back to back classics that will hold centre stage in the week ahead.
RWITC has 1,945 voting members, from a total membership strength of over 8,000. Such a close contest has not been seen since the famous election of 2005-6.
The four weeks of racing, thus far, have had all the right ingredients for what lies ahead. There have already been two charity associations, two Millions, Bollywood presence and the popular Oktober and Christmas Fests. The blazing start lends further credence to RWITC’s growing stature as both a good corporate citizen and as a leader in the diversified experience it brings to its race days.
The innovative RWITC Foundation is on the verge of being launched. Under this banner will come all of our CSR initiatives as well as a whole gamut of events and activities that have sustainability at its core. The Club’s brand strategy partner has frozen the name Green Circle, as its nomenclature, which is interesting as it focuses on green or the environment, as well as circle, which typifies the circular race track and all that it encompasses within it. While racing will always be our core business, it is our equal endeavour to manage this iconic green lung for the good of the city, by preserving its heritage and openness.
The fillies’ classic on Sunday is the most competitive in years with a high quality field of over a dozen expected to line up for the over 50 lakh prize money. Fast fillies’ finish first, screamed our banner creative headline a few years ago for this race. However, over the mile, it is that rare combination of speed and a turn of foot that are attributes, the winner of this premium race need to possess.
