The Royal Western India Turf Club ( RWITC) kicked off the racing season with a zingy inaugural nite at the Mahalaxmi racecourse members’ enclosure yesterday. The RWITC inaugural nite started off with a fashion show, lucky dip (where the winners won stays at the Oxford Golf & Country Club near Pune), music show. Interspersed between the entertainments, Vivek Jain Chairman, RWITC addressed the gathering saying that the club had a difficult year and still has several challenges to overcome. The road bumps include a 100 per cent betting tax hike, the dispute with Gallops restaurant which is still in court and discussions with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on the lease extension for the club (the lease expires in 2013). Yet, Jain ended on an optimistic note saying the, “event was in acknowledgement to a big racing season ahead where the McDowells Indian Derby continues to be the biggest draw.”
