Michael Owen Looks to Score on Day 3 of Glorious Goodwood
By Mohit Lalvani
The feature race at the Glorious Goodwood meet is the group two Goodwood Cup over 2 miles. This year’s revival looks to be a strong one and Michael Owen’s runner, Brown Panther certainly adds interest to the field.
The son of Shirocco has had just one start in 2013; in the Totepool Pontefract Castle Stakes, a listed contest over a mile and a half. This was a race that he won in 2012 as well and followed it up that year with a third in the Irish St. Leger over 2800m.
He has a strong field of 13 others who will oppose him including the Godolphin trio lead by Cavalryman, the winner of the Gold Cup on Dubai World Cup day at Meydan. Sheikh Mohammed will look for retribution here after he witnessed Richard Hughes deny him on the post not just once, but twice yesterday which included the great duel between Toronado and Dawn Approach.
If ever there was evidence that Richard Hughes has stamped himself as an all-time great, it came in his rides at Goodwood yesterday. He knows this track better than anyone and is certain of what his horses are going to produce when asked for an effort. He’s timing his moves more right than wrong and as long as he keeps doing that, he seems to be an unstoppable force for now.
With the meet closing on Saturday, Richard’s other big ride of the week will be on the English 1000 Guineas winner, Sky Lantern in the group one, Nassau Stakes. Most believe that she was extremely unfortunate to lose to Elusive Kate last time out and with Hughes in the form that he is in presently, there will be few who oppose her.
