Mumbai: For the first time ever, the picturesque Worli Seaface became the scene of live cultural performances and special celebrity appearances. The inaugural day of the Worli Festival, which is being organized in association with The Times of India, saw elaborate song and dance by the best known artistes of the country.
The three-day festival, which will be held from January 25 to 27, spans a gamut of events and activities, from popular music and dance performances to food festivals and demonstrations that has drawn participation from the city’s elite citizens. As the Republic Day weekend began on Friday, crowds of curious spectators began milling around the amphitheatre at the seafront. The frame was full to bursting given that locals, passersby and motorists all stopped to see how the familiar grey landscape had altered so colourfully.
A shout of joy went up among the spectators when actor Urmila Matondkar arrived as the guest of honour. She sportingly sang a popular Marathi song to draw the local crowds into the mood.
Singer Shibani Kashyap performed seven or eight of her popular numbers. Another star attraction was singer Shalmali Kholgade, whose song Pareshaan has catapulted her into the big league. “I find open-air shows thoroughly exciting. The live interaction with spectators makes all the difference,” Shalmali said.
Meanwhile, the Turf Club, another parallel venue, saw the opening of a food festival with chef Siddharth Goila. Saturday will see the ‘Cook For Her’ contest in which 10 prominent men in public life will cook for their wives. Police commissioner Satya Pal Singh, Suniel Shetty, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sachin Ahir and Amish Tripathi will show off their culinary skills.
