Better facilities on the cards - By Joe Williams | DNA

Posted on - 11 Jan 2013

A football ground, a couple of tennis courts and a state-of-the-art polo club are some of the things that the newly-elected chairman of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), Khushroo N Dhunjibhoy, has in mind for the club. Besides, of course, ways to upgrade the facilities for racing.

Dhunjibhoy, who is back as the club’s chief after staying away for a couple of years, said that renewing the lease of Mahalaxmi Race Course is also on the top of his agenda.

“I have dealt with all these things in my previous tenure and will ensure that the negotiation is done with the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC),” Dhunjibhoy told DNA.

“RWITC has been maintaining the Mahalaxmi Race Course. Besides racing, it has been used by the general public in many ways. I am sure the BMC will look into the matter and extend the lease.”

The RWITC chief has also chalked out a plan so that the punters get some relaxation since “there is no way the state government will reduce the tax (20%)”. He said: “When it comes to revenue, we are way behind when compared to Bangalore racing and that is because the tax there is less. We (RWITC) will come up with a proposal through which the club has to bear the tax at the initial stages.”
