Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait was felicitated by the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) on Sunday, in recognition of completing an illustrious 50 years as a professional trainer in Western India.

Sait received his trainer’s licence in 1976 after serving his apprenticeship under the noted trainer Aziz Mahmoud. Operating mainly at Mumbai and Pune, he has built an exceptional record, saddling more than 2,200 winners, including 150 Classic victories across the country. His remarkable consistency is also reflected in an impressive tally of 18 ‘trainers’ championship’ titles, including 11 in Mumbai.

Among the most memorable moments of his career came in 1989 when his colt Exhilaration, ridden by Pesi Shroff, captured the Indian Derby before winning the Indian Turf Invitation Cup later that season.

Sait also tasted success in the Invitation Cup with Charon (1984) and Super Brave (1994). His first Classic triumph came in 1980 with Carnival. Raees lifting the Suresh Mahindra Trophy in 2019 provided the trainer with his 2,000th career win.

“I feel deeply honoured and thankful for this recognition marking my 50 years with RWITC. Horse racing has never been just a profession for me but a lifelong passion. I have been fortunate to be associated with wonderful owners and receive unwavering support from jockeys, stable staff, veterinarians and the entire racing fraternity. I also thank RWITC for this gesture and my family for their constant encouragement throughout this journey. This recognition truly means a great deal to me,” said an elated Sait.
