RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ANCIENT TREASURE” IN RACE NO 139 RUN ON 14TH  SEPTEMBER 2014 – TRAINER MANSOOR SHAH & JOCKEY AMYN MERCHANT

Trainer Mansoor Shah and Jockey Amyn Merchant were questioned regarding the captioned subject matter.

Trainer Mansoor Shah stated that the Instructions to the Jockey were to take a good jump, settle wherever comfortable, come close with the field gradually since the colt is drawn on the outside and to do his best. He said that he had also informed the Jockey that the colt tends to run out as he had done in its run during the Mumbai Meeting. He added that he had given the colt a mock race during the Pune Meeting but the colt raced along the rails and therefore he had not drifted out. He said that he had declared Jockey Amyn Merchant as he felt that the Jockey would be able to control the colt better. To another question,  he said that he had not contemplated any change of equipment as the colt had run fairly in the Mock race.

After reviewing the race, the Trainer observed that the Jockey could not bring the colt in close to the field as he hung outwards and thereafter ABDERUS took him further out while straightening for home. He said that since the colt was hanging out, the Jockey had to control him and ride him. He opined that in the last 200 metres the jockey could have used the whip a little earlier but he had to control the horse as well and therefore was probably late in using the whip.

To another question, Trainer Mansoor Shah stated that he had given the colt a minor chance as he had no form coming into this race. His main concern was whether the horse would run straight as he had prepared the horse to run straight and had even given him a Mock race which was satisfactory. He said that he was satisfied with the riding effort of the Jockey keeping in mind that the horse has the habit of hanging out which was known to the Jockey and it may have played on his mind and hence he was more concerned in controlling the horse and riding out as well.

Jockey Amyn Merchant confirmed the instructions and added that he was aware that the horse has the habit of hanging out and had behaved similarly during the Mumbai Meeting. He added that in the race, the horse had jumped well and he had settled him nicely and gradually moved in close on to the field but the horse started to hang out while negotiating the bend and he had to control his mount and ride out hence he was at his mount hands & heels. Also, while straightening for home, his mount was taken wide by ABDERUS and he had used the whip but the horse did not respond and between the 150 – 100 metres his mount had stumbled and he had to gather the horse again and ride out. It was put to the Jockey that he should have been more vigorous from 350 metres onwards to which he reiterated that he had done his best under the circumstances.

The matter was reported to the Stewards for action as deemed fit to take.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 27th September, 2014 interviewed Trainer Mansoor Shah and Jockey Amyn Merchant in the above connection and having viewed the video recording of Race No.139 as also Race No.298 run during the Mumbai Meeting 2013/14 and keeping in mind that ANCIENT TREASURE had hung out in the previous race also, decided to give them the benefit of a grave doubt and severely cautioned them for the future.

Further, in view of the horse’s repeated behavior of hanging out in a race, the Stewards decided to ban ANCIENT TREASURE from racing until shown to the satisfaction of the Stipendiary Stewards in three Mock Races.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “QUID PRO QUO” IN RACE NO 127 RUN ON 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014 – TRAINER NOSHER CAMA

Trainer Nosher Cama was questioned with regard to the captioned subject matter.

Trainer Nosher Cama stated that if one considers the timing clocked by the mare in this race (i.e. 1.14.45) as compared to the previous race (i.e. 1.14.12) in Race No 62, it was practically the same and therefore the mare has not performed poorly but has been consistent. To another question he stated that QUICK FIRE, one of the common horses, has improved on its last run and that QUID PRO QUO has finished close to another common horse, DHANYAVAAD.

It was pointed out to the Trainer that timing of the races was not binding as this factor differs owing to underfoot condition. The Trainer opined that the mare may have reached her peak as far as her Rating was concerned and might not improve anymore and therefore the mare was for sale but he has not been getting good offers and since the mare was with him he had to race her to earn stake money. He further stated that the mare was sound after the race and in the stables the next morning.  The explanation was noted.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “ZARAR” IN RACE NO 138 RUN ON 14TH SEPTEMBER, 2014 – TRAINER MANSOOR SHAH :

Trainer Mansoor Shah was questioned with regard to the captioned subject matter.

At the outset, the Trainer admitted that the gelding had performed poorly. He said that the Instructions to the Jockey were to take a good jump, sit in a forward position, keep a straight course and ride out. The Trainer observed that the Apprentice had not ridden the horse soon after the start and the horse did not run freely. He said that and he did not have any specific reason for the poor performance but the weak handling by the Apprentice may be a reason for the poor showing. He added that when the gelding placed in its last start, that was the first time that the gelding had ever Placed. As for the future plans, the Trainer  opined that the gelding may not have early speed and he would race the gelding over an extended trip over 1200 metres or 1400 metres..

The explanation tendered by the Trainer was noted, however, Apprentice K.N.Bhati has been cautioned for not riding out his mount soon after the start to take up the position as instructed.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “AFFIRMATION” IN RACE NO 139 RUN ON 14TH SEPTEMBER 2014 – TRAINER NAZAK CHENOY :

Trainer Nazak Chenoy was questioned with regard to the captioned subject matter.

The Trainer stated that Blinkers were used for the first time in the career of the gelding which had not suited him. She added that the gelding had worked well with the Blinkers during the morning Track work and also had jumped well out of the Gates during the trials.  The Trainer said that she had declared Jockey A.Sandesh and with a change of equipment, she had expected the gelding to perform well but he ran a disappointing race. She added that next day morning, the gelding had developed fungal infection in the chest area which may have contributed in the gelding being uncomfortable. She said that the gelding was still a maiden.

To another question, she stated that the gelding had been racing well over distances of 1200 and 1400 metres and therefore she had raced him in this 1200 metres race. She said that as compared to the previous race, there were only two changes, viz.. the gelding had Blinkers on and there was a change of Jockey to A.Sandesh from N.S.Parmar who has ridden him all the time. The Trainer informed that she would be discontinuing the use of Blinkers as a measure to improve the gelding in the next race. The explanation was noted.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “STAR GAZING” IN RACE NO 130 RUN ON 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014 – TRAINER SK SUNDERJI

Trainer S.K.Sunderji was questioned regarding the captioned subject matter.

Trainer Sunderji stated that the reasons for the poor performance could be the Firm Going on this day which the gelding may have not liked, Jockey Sandeep Jadhav has ridden the gelding for the first time as he wanted to claim allowance and the penalty for Placing may have been harsh. To another question, he stated that the gelding may have had an off day. He added that he had declared Jockey Sandeep Jadhav as his Apprentice did not ride the gelding well in its previous start where he could have won. The explanation was noted.
