RWITC decides to test feed

Mumbai: The stewards of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) have finally decided to test the alleged contaminated feed supplement to set at rest the controversy surrounding it.

The connections (trainers and owners) of the three horses — Eloise, Ocean And Beyond and Star Future — have been demanding it for almost two months now. The connections have been claiming that the said steroid came to these horses via contaminated feed supplement.

While Pesi Shroff-trained Eloise tested positive after finishing third in the Indian 1000 Guineas, both Ocean And Beyond (trainer Sheraz Sunderji) and Star Future’s (trainer CD Katrak) urine samples returned positive after they had finished first and second, respectively, in the Indian 2000 Guineas. Both the races were held in December last year and ‘Boldenone’ was found in the urine samples of all the three horses. The horses have been disqualified after their second samples too returned positive.

The RWITC stewards decided to go ahead with the testing at their meeting held on Thursday evening. “The stewards in principle have decided to test the feed supplement at the Horseracing Forensic Laboratory, New Market, UK,” informed RWITC chairman Vivek Jain.

“Even though the rules do not make it obligatory, taking an overall view and in order to set the controversy at rest, we decided to go ahead with the testing. The club’s legal advisors were not in favour of it and it was entirely the discretion of the stewards who felt the circumstances warrant it,” added Jain.

The club will, however, first set certain conditions in consultation with its legal advisors to make it clear to the trainers that it will dictate the whole procedure as to who can be present at the testing and that the results will be binding upon them. “We expect to finalise these terms by early next week and the samples will be sent for testing on their acceptance of these parametres,” Jain said.
