Mumbai: While the owners, trainer and jockey were acknowledging the cheers of the massive crowd after the Indian Derby winner went on a victory lap, Dr Anil Kumar was smiling in one corner of the Mahalaxmi racecourse.

It was the then RWITC chief vet Dr Kumar who had saved Rochester from the jaws of death in 2016 when as a baby he had developed severe impaction of the colon after a colic infection in Pune. The Mumbai season was in full swing then and the equine hospital at the Pune Racecourse was not fully functional.

“We needed to perform a surgery immediately otherwise he would have died,” Dr Kumar told TOI on Sunday. With time running out, the 53-year-old decided to perform the operation on the floor of the hospital with the help of Dr Yogesh Bhosale. After a three hour long surgery, they managed to remove the impacted mass from Rochetser’s stomach.

Rochester took a long time to recover and return to training. On Sunday, he hit the jackpot.
