Being Part Of Narredu Family Won't Put Pressure, Says 18-Year Old Jockey

At 18, he may be the youngest jockey riding in this Sun day's King fisher Ultra Indian Derby , but he is also the youngest ever to win an Indian classic after steeringQuasar to victory in the Indian Turf Invitation Cup at the same venue last year.

Indeed, Yash Narredu is talented and carries a smart head on his shoulders and knows too well what it takes to win the Indian Derby ."One who rides a smarter race according to the ability of his horse stands the best chance to win," says the `man' who recently completed 100 wins in his two-yearold career.

"The race starts soon af er the gates open. Then all your decisions are taken in a raction of a second. Don't go by the instructions. Just go with the flow and ride according to your horse," sums up the jockey who has piloted Quasar, the highest stakes earner in the history of Indian racing, to five straight wins in the last one year.

About his mount in the ndian Derby , Ostwind, rained by his father Malesh Narredu, Yash says the geld ng will run a big race. "He has come up well since the Ruia Gold Cup. I have been cantering him in the last two days and he has been impressive. It's an open race and I hope the luck of the race helps my mount. With 20 horses in the fray , anything can happen. You never know who will get stuck in traffic, who will lose steamin the last 400 metres," says Yash.

Yash's father Malesh, uncle Satish and cousin Suraj all have won the Indian Derby , but he does not feel the pressure to join the big league. "Things will fall in place. I am not in a hurry ," he says and reveals that apart from his father and cousin Suraj, it is the great Aslam Kader who also acted as a great mentor. "99 % of my whipping is shaped by Kader sir."

Yash feels Desert God can win the Derby this year. "He won well in Kolkata though it did not look impressive because of the shorter homestretch. Mahalaxmi's homestretch will suit his style. He is my pick for the Derby ."
