Love for lavani
Mumbai Mirror

IN keeping with the times, and to keep the race-goers enter tained during the two-hour break which the day-night horse racing programme took on Saturday, the Royal Western India Turf Club had arranged a lavani performance on its first enclosure lawn.

While members engaged themselves in a fierce debate at the Extraordinary General Meeting, a couple of lavani artistes gyrated to lilting Marathi folk numbers and were pleasantly surprised to find an extremely appreciative crowd squatted on the lawns. There was spontaneous cheering and whistling, as seen in the tamasha theatres, from the spectators. Spotted among the audience was actor Kunal Kapoor, who himself is busy preparing for the week-long music and drama festival, which makes its debut at Mahalaxmi racecourse paddock tonight. Referring to the staging of the lavani performance, Kapoor told this diarist, “RWITC needs to promote such programmes apart from horse racing.“ We agree.
