Agostini throws hat in ring

Bangalore: In a bold move, the connections of Agostini — owners Vijay Mallya and Ashok Ranpise and trainer Jaggy Dhariwal — on the insistence of French saddle artiste Louis Philippe Beuzelin, have decided to bring the Bangalore winter Derby winner to Mumbai. He will compete in the richest and the most glamorous event in the Indian racing calendar, the McDowell Indian Derby on Sunday.

After winning the Bangalore blue riband in style on Republic Day, Beuzelin disclosed that Agostini remained fresh and the Kunigal bred colt deserved to compete against the best.

“He is a very brave and big hearted colt and he was full of running even after crossing the finishing post and that’s the reason I advised my owners to take a shot in Mumbai and I’m delighted that they readily agreed to do it despite the fact that they need to pay a lot of money for a final entry,” said the Frenchman from Barbados.

A delighted Ashok Ranpise, after leading in his maiden Derby winner, said: “Jeremiah and Murioi are the only two frontline contenders in Mumbai and Agostini, after his victory at home, looks good enough to compete against the best.”

The Mumbai based owner also informed that Agostini is expected to arrive at Mahalaxmi Racecourse early on Wednesday
