Saddam helps India win jockeys’ war

By Shailendra Awasthi TNN

Mumbai: Bangalore based jockey Saddam Hussain exhibited impressive saddle skills to guide the Indian apprentice team to a thumping 90-74 win over Singapore in the two-day India-Singapore Apprentice Jockeys Match Race competition that concluded at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on Sunday.

The 18-year-old won once and finished second twice in the four-race competition between five jockeys from each country. For his fantastic effort, Saddam was awarded a silver whip.

“It’s a great day in my small career,” said the jockey who works for renowned trainer Satish Narredu in Bangalore. “This was the first ever opportunity for me to represent my country and I’m proud that I did my bit in India’s victory,” said Saddam who’s learned riding at the Bangalore Amateur Racing Institute (BARI).

Damian Kinninmont, leader of the Singapore team, was all praise for the young lad. “My boys did well but certainly home conditions favoured Indian jockeys. However, I must say that Saddam is a good talent and you will hear a lot from him in future,” said the former Australian jockey now working for Singapore Turf Club as a starter.

“It was great to see the young jockeys from both the countries putting up a good show. I’m sure they will return home with very good memories and enriching experience,” said RWITC chairman Khusroo Dhunjibhoy. “Events like these give youngsters so much more confidence to do better as, after all, some of these apprentice jockeys of today will become champions tomorrow,” said Adil Gandhy who was brain behind this event.
