RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RIDING OF APPRENTICE P.TREVOR ON “PURE POWER” IN RACE NO.122 – THE JASPAL ENTERPRISES SEPTEMBER HANDICAP RUN ON SATURDAY, 4TH SEPTEMBER, 2010 – TRAINER NIRAD KARANJAWALA HAD LODGED A VERBAL COMPLAINT AGAINST APP.P.TREVOR FOR NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Nirad Karanjawala and Apprentice P.Trevor, who was accompanied by his Master, Trainer S.K.Sunderji, in the above connection. Trainer Nirad Karanjawala said that his filly PURE POWER performs well only if she hits the front or is kept well up. He said that the filly had won a race at the end of the Mumbai Meeting 2009/10 going start to finish and had also performed well in two Million Races where she was kept well up and the only race she had performed poorly in Mumbai was the one where she was not able to hit the front or be well up. Keeping this in mind, he had specifically instructed Apprentice P.Trevor to take a good jump and go to the front and make his own pace and after turning for home, to do his best.

Apprentice P.Trevor confirmed the instructions and added that the filly jumped out awkwardly and thereafter the horses on his either side shifted course and blocked his path and therefore he could not hit the front as instructed. He said that this was the first time he rode the filly and he had not worked her before the race.

The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Apprentice P.Trevor that even conceding that the filly took a slight awkward jump and thereafter he was blocked, however, keeping in mind that he was specifically told to hit the front, he should have made some efforts to hit the front or be well up. Apprentice P.Trevor said that thereafter the pace had become fast and since the hill was approaching, he decided to settle the filly behind instead of pushing her and blowing her up the hill.

Trainer Nirad Karanjawala opined that Apprentice P.Trevor had not made sufficient efforts to hit the front and after the race gave the excuse that he had received interference at the start, however, he felt that there was no mala-fide intent.

To a query, Trainer Nirad Karanjawala said that this filly had jumped out awkwardly and tried to go out once before during the last Mumbai Meeting but thereafter he had shown her in two mock races to the satisfaction of the Stipendiary Stewards. He said that he had not informed Apprentice P.Trevor about the filly’s peculiarity i.e. she performs well only if she is upfront and  does not perform well from behind. When asked as to the pattern of running of the filly in her first run in Pune i.e. Race No.63, Trainer Nirad Karanjawala replied that in that race also he had instructed Jockey Dashrath Singh to hit the front and even though the Jockey tried, he could not hit the front, possibly since it was the first run of the filly after the long break.

Trainer S.K.Sunderji said that when Trainer Nirad Karanjawala approached him to relieve App.P.Trevor for this ride, he had advised Trainer Nirad Karanjawala to give him specific instructions. He felt that Apprentice P.Trevor is an upcoming Jockey and Trainer Nirad Karanjawala should have informed the boy about the filly’s peculiarity and also been more specific in the instructions.

Apprentice P.Trevor was warned to make all out efforts to follow the instructions in the future. Further, Trainer Nirad Karanjawala was advised that if he is aware of any peculiarity in his horse, he must bring the same to the attention of his Jockey before the race.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “RIDING FANTASY” IN RACE NO.148 – THE INGLENOOK PLATE RUN ON 12TH SEPTEMBER, 2010 :

The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 18th September, 2010 considered the evidence obtained by the Stipendiary Stewards in the above enquiry. They interviewed Trainer C.D.Katrak and Apprentice P.Trevor, who was accompanied by his Master, Mr.S.K.Sunderji, and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of Race No.148, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Apprentice P.Trevor  in the subject case. However, keeping in mind that he was an Apprentice and this was his first instance of appearing before the Stewards, they decided to give him the benefit of a grave doubt for not following the Trainer’s instructions and riding an illjudged race. He was severely cautioned that on a repetition of such riding in the future, severe action may be taken against him.

ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “MR GREEDY” IN RACE NO.130 – THE SOUTHERN COMMAND GOLD TROPHY (GR.3) RUN ON SUNDAY, 5TH SEPTEMBER, 2010 WHERE HE WAS UNPLACED. THE GELDING HAD WON A WEEK PRIOR IN THE RACE NO.99 OVER 1600 METRES :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer M.K.Jadhav and Apprentice P.Trevor in the above connection. Trainer M.K.Jadhav said that MR GREEDY had not run below form. He said that in Race No.99 MR GREEDY beat MISCHEVIOUS TROT, a Class II horse whereas this time he ran with pure Class I horses. Also, the horses who beat him this time, were horses who had beaten him earlier at level weights whereas this time he was giving them weight. Further, although his horse had finished 9th in Race No.130, he was within six lengths of the winner and if at all, he may have performed 2 or 3 lengths behind form which he felt was possibly due to him having run in a week’s time after a hard race carrying top weight in Race No.99. To a further question, Trainer M.K.Jadhav clarified that the horse did not have any rash when he ran in Race No.130 and the rumours were unfounded. He explained that since the time the horse was a baby till he became 4 years, he was dry coated and did not sweat freely and hence he is stabled in an Air Conditioned stall in Mumbai. He said that the horse used to bite himself on either side of the flanks, more so on the left side and the bite marks have remained since then and whenever his coat is not proper the bite marks are more obvious. He said that Dr.S.K.Kulkarni has been treating this horse all along and even after Race No.130 he had come to the stables along with two other Vets and examined the horse and also checked his Veterinary Log Book.  Trainer M.K.Jadhav was informed that the Sr.V.O. had submitted a report that the horse did not have rash but old bite marks on the left flank.

When asked to explain the horse having gained about 10 kgs within a weeks time of his last run, Trainer M.K.Jadhav stated that after Race No.99, the horse was given rest  and kept on slow work and he was also given saline for re-hydration and being a big horse and a good eater, he did gain weight since he had started eating well.  He said that the horse had done the same even in Mumbai, where he started his first run during Winter months at 523 kgs. and thereafter instead of losing weight in summer, he had gained weight and went up to 535 kgs towards the end of the season.

When questioned, Apprentice P.Trevor said that he found nothing wrong with the horse in the race.

The explanation tendered by Trainer M.K.Jadhav and Apprentice P.Trevor was noted.
