RE : RACE NO.207 – THE VOLKSWAGEN INDIA TROPHY (DIV.I) RUN ON SUNDAY, 10TH OCTOBER, 2010 – INTERFERENCE AT THE START :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that at the start, STERLING SILVER (Towfeeq R.Shaikh) drifted out and bored KHURSANIYAH (App.M.A.Roushan) for some distance and after moving away from each other, KHURSANIYAH shifted in and jostled with STERLING SILVER.
The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 16th October, 2010 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of the race, held the view that the incident was accidental. However, the Stipendiary Stewards were directed to warn Jocey Towfeeq R.Shaikh to be more careful at the start, in the future.
RE : RACE NO.207 – THE VOLKSWAGEN INDIA TROPHY (DIV.I) RUN ON SUNDAY, 10TH OCTOBER, 2010 – Jockey S.Sunil, rider of “LORD OF KILLARNEY” – reported to the Stewards for causing interference to AQUALINA (Y.S.Srinath) :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that passing 200 metres, LORD OF KILLARNEY (S.Sunil) shifted in under the use of the whip and tightened AQUALINA (Y.S.Srinath) due to which Jockey Y.S.Srinath could not ride out for a fair bit of distance in the straight. As such the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.
The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 16th October, 2010 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of the race, directed the Stipendiary Stewards to take action against the Jockey for improper use of the whip. Accordingly, the Stipendiary Stewards fined Jockey S.Sunil a sum of Rs.2000/- for improper use of the whip on his mount LORD OF KILLARNEY.
ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “OCEAN YARRMAN” IN RACE NO.155 – THE RADIO ONE TROPHY (1400 METRES) RUN ON SATURDAY, 18TH SEPTEMBER, 2010 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer S.K.Sunderji and Jockey C.Rajendra in the above connection.
Trainer S.K.Sunderji stated that he had instructed the Jockey to be in 4th/5th position and to do his best in the straight. When questioned about his observation of the race, Tr.Sunderji said that soon after the start his horse suddenly fell back and on questioning, Jockey C.Rajendra informed him after the race that DISTANT PROMISE (T.Mahesh) was leaning on to him by virtue of which he lost his position. Thereafter he waited for a while and once the horse got into momentum, he gradually improved his position and did his best. He felt that if the horse was in a better position, he would have won the race but probably luck was not in his favour.
Jockey C.Rajendra confirmed the instructions and added that soon after the start DISTANT PROMISE (T.Mahesh) kept leaning on to him, he saw the horse’s head turned to one side and the horse was gradually coming in. Jockey C.Rajendra said he did not wish to shift in abruptly at that stage in case some other horse was on his inside, therefore, he first made sure that nobody was on his inside and then shifted in on to the rails and since there were only 9 runners, he found himself in second last position. Thereafter, he waited for a while since he was travelling up the hill and once the horse came into momentum and wanted to improve his position but the front two horses were not good enough and were not moving ahead and therefore he pulled his horse out nearing 600 metres and gradually improved him and rode him out under whip but he got beat by a neck. He said that he rode this horse once before in Mumbai, however, this was the first run of the horse after being gelded and he was running after a gap of nearly 6 months. He added that he had worked the horse before the race.
The video recording of Race No.155 was viewed several times in the presence of Trainer S.K.Sunderji and Jockey C.Rajendra and Trainer Sunderji was asked whether Jockey C.Rajendra could have made more efforts between 1000 metres and 600 metres to improve his position. Trainer Sunderji said that this was a race for horses which have run and not placed 2nd or 3rd and therefore he had felt that the Jockey would be able to settle the horse in 4th/5th position but after seeing the race, he felt that the early pace was fast and once his horse received interference and fell back, the Jockey used his judgement and improved the horse gradually from the outside and made his move but the luck of the race was not with him and he just lost by a neck. Tr.Sunderji said that this horse had a set back after his last run in Mumbai, in that, the horse was gelded and he developed infection and the horse lost weight and he had to nurse him up gradually with pick-ups and tonics. Also, he could not gallop the horse regularly since the work depended on his day to day condition, he was mostly on canters. Further, the horse ran with Blinkers in Mumbai and this was the first run of the horse without Blinkers and he did not show initial speed.
After viewing the video recording of the race and scrutinizing the betting sheets, Jockey C.Rajendra was given the benefit of the doubt.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF “ALIYANA” IN RACE NO.190 – THE KANTHARA PLATE (1000 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 3RD OCTOBER, 2010 WHICH THE FILLY WON AS COMPARED TO HER PREVIOUS TWO RUNS I.E. RACE NO.84 (1200 METRES) AND RACE NO.138 (1400 METRES) WHERE SHE WAS UNPLACED :
The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 16th October, 2010 considered the evidence obtained by the Stipendiary Stewards in the above enquiry. They interviewed Trainer H.J.Antia and having heard him and viewing the video recording of Race No.190 as also the previous two races of the filly i.e. Race Nos.84 and 138, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by him in the subject case. The Stewards noted that in the previous two occasions he ran the filly over 1200 and 1400 metres and put up Jockey T.Atul and the filly was available at longer odds and finished down the field. Thereafter, in three weeks time he accepted to race the filly in Race No.190 over 1000 metres and declared Jockey Neeraj Rawal and the filly was well backed and won the race. The Stewards also noted his past record. However, considering that this was the filly’s third run of her career, the Stewards took a lenient view in the matter and decided to fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/-. Further, he was cautioned that on a repetition of a similar offence, severe action may be initiated against him.
