ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “ARUSHA” IN RACE NO.80 – THE AUTUMN BLUE PLATE (DIV.I) RUN ON THURSDAY, 19TH DECEMBER, 2013 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Bezan Chenoy in the above connection. Tr.Bezan Chenoy said that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and sit in mid-bunch wherever he is comfortable, come into the straight and to do his best. He said that he took no exception to the Jockey’s riding. When asked to explain the filly’s poor performance in this race, Tr.Bezan Chenoy said that the filly had shown no sparkle or form coming into this race. He said that ARUSHA is a light frame filly and does not require much work. Also, one can find out how well a horse has worked only if you get them off the bridle but he does not get his horses off the bridle.
He said that the filly had maintained the condition she had in Pune, she was looking well and her Blood Picture was fine and therefore he ran her in Race No.80. He said that apart from her one win at Pune, she has raced badly every other time. When asked to explain the drift in odds, Trainer Bezan Chenoy said that he too had heard that there was a drift in the odds on this filly but there may be other horses whose odds may have come down. He reiterated that the filly had shown no form coming into this race and unfortunately, a lot of horses from his stable run at short a price when they should not and he has no control over the odds. Trainer Bezan Chenoy submitted a copy of the Work Log Book and the Blood Picture Report in respect of ARUSHA which was found to be normal.
At the request of Trainer Bezan Chenoy, the video recording of ARUSHA’s winning race in Pune i.e. Race No.75 and her subsequent run over 1400 metres in Race No.198 were viewed. Trainer Bazan Chenoy opined that the filly had run a similar poor race in Race No.198 at Pune as she did this time in Race No.80 and he was still not able to understand her.
The explanation tendered by Trainer Bezan Chenoy was noted.

ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “WARRIOR PRINCE” IN RACE NO.101 - THE VICTORY MARCH PLATE (DIV.I) (1000 METRES) RUN ON 26TH DECEMBER, 2013 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.32 (1000 METRES) RUN ON 1ST DECEMBER, 2013 WHERE HE WAS UNPLACED :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H.J.Antia in the above connection. Tr.H.J.Antia said that he had given similar instructions in both the races i.e. to try and go to the front or to sit in 2nd/3rd position and to do the best. He said that in the previous race, the horse was very keen and wanting to go to the front but Jockey A.Sandesh used his judgement and tried to sit 2nd/3rd position and in the process kept fighting with the horse for approximately 500 metres as could be noticed on the video recording that the horse’s mouth was open and his head was on one side at one stage and has also changed legs 2 to 3 times. Due to this, coming into the straight when the Jockey asked for an effort, the horse did not respond and finished unplaced and despite the poor handling, the horse was hardly 5 ½ from the winner. He said that in Race No.101, Jockey S.P.Ranjane has been at the horse right from jump out. When asked as to why he did not report the matter to the Stipendiary Stewards if the Jockey had not followed the instructions, Trainer Antia said that he had instructed him to go to the front or to sit in 2nd/3rd position and after the race the Jockey informed him that he wanted to sit behind the front horse and then ride him out in the straight but unfortunately the horse kept fighting for its head and coming into the straight when he asked for an effort, the horse did not respond. He said that he was not blaming Jockey A.Sandesh of mal-practice, it was just an error of judgement on his part and being a top Jockey he did not report the matter. When asked whether he had fancied the horse in Race No.101, Trainer Antia said that despite the horse fighting for its head for nearly 500 metres in Race No.32, he had still finished only 5 ½ lengths from the winner, therefore he had fancied the horse this time also. He pointed out that there was no common horse in both the races.
The matter is reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.
The Stewards at their meeting held on Sunday, 29th December, 2013 interviewed Trainer H.J.Antia in the above connection and having heard him and having viewed the video recording of both the races, noted the explanation tendered by him in the subject enquiry. However, the Stewards have noted with disfavor that Trainer H.J.Antia was coming up before them too often for inconsistent performance of his charges and have decided to severely caution him to be more careful in the future.

ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “DOUBLE O SEVEN” IN RACE NO.100 – THE LADY MOURA PLATE (1000 METRES) RUN ON THURSDAY, 26TH DECEMBER, 2013 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer M.Narredu in the above connection. He said that this was the first run of the horse in his charge. The horse was badly drawn (drawn-13) and he had instructed Jockey Dashrath Singh to take a good start, be quick out of the gate and try to go to the front but if someone is chasing then to sit in 2nd/3rd position and to do his best. He said that after the race the Jockey informed him that he was not ready since the horse was leaning back in the gate and that was the reason he could not take a quick start. Trainer M.Narredu said that he had fancied the horse and was quite disappointed with the poor performance and therefore he had sent the horse to the Equine Hospital for scope and he was informed by the Vet that the horse had upper Respiratory Tract infection and severe Guttural Pouch infection and had recommended a course of antibiotics. Another possibility for the poor performance could be that Jockey J.Fortune who had worked the horse prior to this race had suggested to use a Tongue Strap on this horse and although the horse had worked with the Tongue Strap, he now felt that the Tongue Strap may have not suited the horse. He said that he had consulted the Club’s Vet on this issue as well and the Vet had informed him that the horse has a palate problem and advised him not to discontinue the Tongue Strap. He agreed with the Stipendiary Stewards that the horse was trying to run out during the race and would request the Vet to examine his mouth. To another query, Trainer M.Narredu said that considering that the horse had run a good second in his previous outing, he had fancied the horse but the horse had not worked impressively and there were a few unknown horses who were also fancied in this race, hence he was not 100% sure. When questioned about the drift in odds on the horse, he said that he has no control over the odds and in the past he has had horses who had drifted and won, however, other horses may have been backed down in this race.
The Club’s V.O. subsequently submitted a report that DOUBLE O SEVEN was examined on 27/12/2013 and found to have wolf tooth on the right side which was extracted.
The explanation tendered by Trainer M.Narredu has been noted.
