RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “FARAMARZ” IN RACE NO.202 – THE SPRUNGLI PLATE (DIV.I)  (1400 METRES) RUN ON 16TH FEBRUARY, 2012 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.146 (1200 METRES) RUN ON 19TH JANUARY, 2012 WHERE  HE WAS UNPLACED:

Trainer Janardhan and Jockey Akshay were questioned in the above connection. Trainer Janardhan said that he had given similar instructions to Jockey in both the races i.e. to sit well up in 3rd or 4th position and to do his best. He said that in the previous race i.e. Race No.146 the horse ran in a higher class over 1200 metres and being the first run after a long lay off he had not fancied the horse in that race. He added that the horse does not have initial speed and hence the Jockey was unable to sit in a forward position in Race No.146 but the horse was gaining ground towards the end and finished seventh. He said that FARAMARZ is a well bred horse but had raced only once in Pune after which he had to be laid off because of an injury. Thereafter he had removed the shoeing and the horse showed improvement in work and raced first time in Mumbai over 1200 metres. After that run the horse had shown much improvement in work and on the basis of that and since he was running in a lower class this time and the distance was 200 metres more, he had fancied the horse but he did not expect the horse to win so easy.

Jockey Akshay said that in the previous run he was instructed to sit well up in 4th or 5th position and to do his best and the horse was running in a higher class over 1200 metres and did not have early speed and hence he could not sit well up as instructed. He said that in the race he won, he was instructed to sit well up in 3rd or 4th position and this time the horse was running in a lower class and the distance was 200 metres extra and he was able to sit in 2nd/3rd position as instructed and won the race.

The Stewards at their meeting held on Wedndesday, 29th February, 2012 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of both the race, directed the Stipendiary Stewards to warn Trainer Janardhan and Jockey Akshay to be more careful in the future.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “RISKY BUSINESS” IN RACE NO.192 – THE AMATEUR RIDERS’ CLUB TROPHY (1600 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 12TH FEBRUARY, 2012 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.124 (1200 METRES) RUN ON 5TH JANUARY, 2012 WHERE HE WAS UNPLACED :

Trainer Shyam Habbu and Jockey Malcolm Kharadi were questioned in the above connection. Trainer Shyam Habbu said that RISKY BUSINESS has a lot of problems, he is a big horse having straight legs and a dip back and despite all efforts, the horse did not come to hand as a 2/3 year old and hence could not be raced. The horse was kept at the farm throughout the Pune Season and after returning back into training in Mumbai, he started showing signs of improvement. Therefore, in consultation with the Owner, he decided to race him so as to see how he would take the race and thereafter decide on his future course of action. He said that in Race No.124 over 1200 metres it was the first run of the horse’s career as a 4-year-old and he was drawn-13 in a big field of 15 runners and after a slow jump, the horse possibly was scared and raced green and trailed the field in the early part, however, turning for home the horse came into stride and started improving and he covered much ground to finish with the field and also returned sound. Subsequently, he kept the horse in regular work and gave him 2 or 3 spurts and also gave him 2 or 3 gate practice to improve his habit and the horse showed much improvement and he had also lost weight and stripped fitter. Therefore, after giving a break of over a month, he decided to race the horse again in Race No.192 over 1600 metres, however, considering his previous poor run, he did not fancy him much. To another question, he said that he had given similar instructions in both the race i.e. to take a good jump, take whatever position he could and to do the best, however, in the previous race, being a big field, the horse got scared and did not know what to do and hence he trailed the field early part whereas this time the field being small and with more gate practice, he took a good jump and hit the front. To another query, he said that he had not changed the work or feed pattern after the previous run.

Jockey Malcolm Kharadi said that Jockey C.Ruzaan was to ride this horse in Race No.124, however, Jockey C.Ruzaan was injured and last minute he got the ride. He said that he had worked RISKY BUSINESS many times but only in canter. He said that the horse has many problems and could not come in hand earlier and in Race No.124 it was the first run of the horse. He said that he felt that 1200 metres may be a bit sharp for the horse and hence he had cantered the horse on the way to the start so as to warm him up. In the race, the horse missed the jump and raced green and even though he kept nudging him, he did not gallop early part and the whole field went far ahead. It was only in the straight that the horse started galloping and covered lot of ground to finish with the field and after the race he had advised the Trainer to give the horse more time and run him over a longer trip. When asked as to what made him think that 1200 metres would be sharp for the horse, Jockey Kharadi said that he had worked the horse and the horse did not show speed early part and needed time to warm up.

The explanation tendered by Trainer Shyam S.Habbu and Jockey Malcolm Kharadi was noted.
