RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “GOLDEN SPURS” IN RACE NO.341 – THE EUPHEMIA PLATE (DIV.I) (1000 METRES) RUN ON 14TH APRIL, 2012 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO ITS PREVIOUS RUNS DURING THE CURRENT MUMBAI MEETING – TRAINER HJ ANTIA.

The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 28th April, 2012 considered the evidence obtained by the Stipendiary Stewards in the above enquiry. Having heard the submissions made by Trainer H.J.Antia, the Stewards decided to give him the benefit of a very grave doubt in this case. However, arising of the above case, the Stewards decided to open an enquiry into the running and riding of GOLDEN SPURS in Race No.208 and in Race No.255.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPLAINT LODGED BY TRAINER H.J.ANTIA AGAINST JOCKEY A.SANDESH FOR NOT FOLLOWING HIS INSTRUCTIONS ON “STAR EMPIRE” IN RACE NO.353 – THE A.GEDDIS PLATE RUN ON 15TH APRIL, 2012 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey A.Sandesh in the above connection. Trainer H.J.Antia said that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and sit in 2nd/3rd position and to do his best. He said that STAR EMPIRE jumped out slightly slow and thereafter the outside horse DISTANT PROMISE shifted in on to his horse and closed the gap. However, thereafter the Jockey should have pulled the horse out and tried to sit 2nd/3rd as instructed which he failed to do and instead chose to come from the inside whereby he was blocked and fell back to the last position as a result the horse was left to cover much ground in the straight. Also, at about 850 metres, the Jockey had the chance to improve his position from the outside but he chose to remain on the inside.

When questioned, Jockey A.Sandesh said that he was instructed to sit in 2nd/3rd/4th position and to do his best. He added that the horse was slightly slow and thereafter DISTANT PROMISE who was drawn on his outside, shifted in and took his ground. Even then he had pushed the horse to take the gap but the horse was not quick enough and thereafter the horse on the inside shifted out slightly and he did not get a chance to make his run and hence he decided to sit along the rails and come home the shortest way.  When asked as to why he did not try to come out at the 850 metres, Jockey Sandesh said that if he had moved out at that stage, he would have had to travel wide.

After viewing the video recording of the race, Jockey A.Sandesh was given the benefit of the doubt.

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MACHO UNO” IN RACE NO.328 – THE R.R.KOMANDUR PLATE (DIV.I) (1000 METRES) RUN ON 7TH APRIL, 2012 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Anil Kumar and Jockey A.Ashhad Asbar in the above connection. Trainer Anil Kumar stated that he had instructed the Jockey to settle the horse where ever he could and to do his best. He said that the Jockey had informed him after the race that he did not get a clear run and he took no objection to the Jockey’s riding.

The video recording of the race was shown and it was pointed out to Trainer Anil Kumar that after entering the straight, there was a big gap along the rails and the Jockey had not made sufficient efforts to take that gap. Tr.Anil Kumar said that the gap opened only for a short time and his horse was approximately 3 lengths behind at the stage and his Jockey was riding out but was unable to take the gap.

Jockey A.Ashhad Asbar confirmed the instructions and said that the horse did not have early speed and therefore he settled him in mid bunch and after entering the straight he had ridden out the horse and did his best but he did not get a clear run. When asked as to why he had not taken the gap on the inside after entering the straight, he said that the gap opened momentarily and he was riding out at that stage but was not able to take the gap and hence he kept his horse two horses away from the rails and rode him out. Also, the horse in front kept an erratic course and therefore he was not able to get a clear run. When asked as to why he had not used the whip, he said that the horse was responding well when ridden out hands and heels and therefore he did not use the whip. Also, he has been warned and fined with regard to the use of the whip and therefore he now concentrates more in riding out hands and heels.

After viewing the previous races of the horse, the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “THIS ONES FOR YOU” IN RACE NO.357 – THE CHARON TROPHY (DIV.II) RUN ON 21ST APRIL, 2012 :

The Stipendiary reported that they had questioned Trainer Rehanullah Khan and Jockey A.Sandesh in the above connection. Tr.Rehanullah Khan said that he had instructed the Jockey to sit about 4 lengths from the leader, off the pace and let the horse travel on its own, not to hassle him and to ride out in the straight with minimum use of the whip. Citing the peculiarity of the horse, he said that the horse does not have a normal head movement. He added that the horse had travelled well on the bridle in its last three outings and he ran well with support, therefore, the tactics for the horse was changed from its earlier two runs during the current Mumbai Meeting.

To another question, the trainer said that the horse has always been working well and had shown improvement in its races with the changed tactics. He added that the horse has the ability to race competitively over 1000 metres also, considering that he has not run over this distance during the current Mumbai Meeting.

The race was viewed. The Trainer stated that THIS ONES FOR YOU was hampered for a clear run by MIRACLE OF MERCY approaching the 600 metres, which resulted in the horse breaking a stride and had to be held up and again near 400 metres, RAN BANKA shifted out and hamper his run and the interference caused his horse to lose momentum. He said that he was satisfied with the Jockey’s riding.

The explanation tendered was noted.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “VIVA ZAPATA” IN RACE NO.338 – THE RAZA ALI PLATE RUN ON 08/04/2012 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO ITS EARLIER RUN IN RACE NO.301 RUN ON 25/03/2012 WHERE IT WAS UNPLACED :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Janardhan in the above connection. He said that this horse had started showing improvement after his first two runs in Mumbai and he had also come down in Class and therefore he had fancied the horse in Race No.301 with Jockey V.Phadke. He said that he had instructed Jockey V.Phadke to settle the horse in 4th/5th position and to do his best. However, the horse possibly did not go well for this Jockey and although he was pushing, the horse did not respond and he was not able to sit as instructed and also, the horse stumbled near 1100 metres and he ran a poor race. He said that the horse had returned sound after that race and hence he decided to race him again in Race No.338 over 1600 metres and put up a better rider viz. Jockey Nirmal Jodha with the sole purpose of getting a feed back on the horse and he had not fancied him that day. He declared Jockey Nirmal Jodha and gave him similar instructions i.e. to settle the horse in 2nd/3rd position and to do his best. However, there was no pace in this race and the Jockey found himself in the front and the horse won. When asked as to what feedback he got from Jockey Nirmal Jodha, Tr.Janardhan said that the Jockey informed him that the horse will win again and therefore he accepted to run him again over 1800 metres in Race No.364 and fancied him but the horse finished last and after the race he was found to be sore. To a further query, Tr.Janardhan said that he had not changed the work/feed pattern of the horse and the horse won un-fancied in Race No.338. When asked as to why he had raced the horse in a short span of time, Tr.Janardhan said that his only purpose was to get a feed back on the horse since he had performed poorly in Race No.301 where he had fancied him.

The explanation tendered by Trainer Janardhan was noted.
