ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “STAR EMPIRE” IN RACE NO.129 – THE INDIAN AIR FORCE TROPHY (1400 METRES) RUN ON THURSDAY, 12TH JANUARY, 2012:
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Suresh Chavan (deputizing for Trainer Vinayak) and Jockey R.Hughes in the above connection. Jockey R.Hughes said that he was asked to ride his own race. He said that in the previous race i.e. Race No.104 run over 1200 metres he had received a check and fallen back to the last position. However, in that race the horse had travelled well from behind and had finished on well. Therefore, keeping in mind that race and the fact that this time the horse was running over 1400 metres, he wanted to ride the horse more or less in the same way as he rode last time. He said that the horse was travelling well till about 800 metres but rounding the bend he had to niggle him, which surprised him, since in the previous race the horse was travelling well. Thereafter, coming into the straight there was a gap ahead which he wanted to take but he noticed that the Jockey on the horse who was racing slightly ahead of him on the outside picked up the stick in his left hand and he was afraid that if he went for the gap and the outside horse shifts in, he would have had to check his mount and the race would be over for him. Therefore, he came off the heels of the front horse and switched the horse to the outside, used the whip and rode him out. He opined that if he had got a clear run he may have won the race. When asked as to why he did not lodge an objection, Jockey Hughes said that the outside horse shifted in after he had made up his mind to switch to the outside in anticipation of that the horse shifting in since he had picked up the stick in the left hand and he saw no reason to object. He said that he had ridden out the horse till the post.
Trainer Suresh Chavan said that Jockey R.Hughes works all the horses and he is always told to ride his own race. He said that the Jockey had ridden a perfect race, except that he had met with interference approaching 200 metres and had to switch to the outside but thereafter he had ridden out the horse and he was satisfied with the Jockey’s riding.
The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 28th January, 2012 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of the race, decided that no action was called for in the matter.
ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “STAR EMPIRE” IN RACE NO.104 – THE RAO SAHEB D.K.PARKAR TROPHY (1200 METRES) RUN ON THURSDAY, 29TH DECEMBER, 2011:
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Suresh Chavan (deputizing for Trainer Vinayak) and Jockey R.Hughes in the above connection. Jockey R.Hughes said that he was asked to ride his own race. He said that the horse was running after almost thirteen and half month and he presumed that there was some problem with the horse. However, he did not know the history of the horse and was not sure how he should be ridden and in his mind he had planned to ride the horse from 3rd/4th position. He said that he was aware that BESPOKE was his only danger and being a fast filly she would be up there and he wanted to be in touch with her all the way. However, soon after the start he received interference and found himself in the last position and therefore he had to ride the horse in a different manner. He said that the horse ran a good race, he travelled well and in the straight he had to switch him to the outside to give him a clear run and the horse finished on well in that race. Jockey R.Hughes said that the horse had worked very well but he did not produce the same in the race and he felt that the horse may be having wind problem. He said that on his advise the horse was scoped for blood vessel and he was found to be clear.
Trainer Suresh Chavan confirmed that the Jockey was asked to ride his own race. He said that the horse had received interference at the start and fell back. Thereafter, on entering the straight again the horse did not get a clear run and by the time the horse was switched to the outside and made his run, the race was over. He said that he was satisfied with the Jockey’s riding.
The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 28th January, 2012 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of the race, noted the explanation.
