ADDITIONAL REPORTS:

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “CONGRESSIONAL” IN RACE NO.21 – THE ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAY QUEENS NECKLACE CUP, RUN ON 23RD NOVEMBER, 2014 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Bezan Chenoy and Jockey A.Sandesh in the above connection. Trainer Bezan Chenoy stated that he had specifically instructed the jockey to sit in the first four, sit well up, not to go to the front and to do his best and the jockey has ridden this horse before and knows the horse and also the horse likes to race when well up. He further stated that soon after jump out Jockey Dashrath Singh (TROPPA BELLA) has tried to keep him out so Jockey Sandesh has taken a tug at his horse and has tried to come in. Thereafter, instead of letting the horse make normal progress at that stage and sit well up, he chose to sit far back. Trainer Bezan Chenoy further stated that it was a split second decision on the part of the Jockey when he chose to come in but he should have made some effort to gradually improve his position. When he came into the straight, he has come in well, he has made a run and used the whip. The moment he stopped using the whip the horse has responded and instead of pushing him out and winning the race, he changed his whip hand and used the whip which was not necessary. He said that the horse was running straight and there was no reason for the jockey to change his whip hand, if the Jockey had put his stick down and ridden him out, he could have won.

Trainer Bezan Chenoy stated that he was not happy with the ride of the Jockey as he felt that the Jockey gave his horse a bad ride.

Jockey A Sandesh stated that his Instructions were to be in 3rd/ 4th or 5th position and to ride out from 400 metres. He stated that he was drawn-10 and as his mount jumped out, both TROPPA BELLA and SPEED KING came on to him and he had to shift out and he felt that these horses may carry him further out, therefore he checked his mount and shifted in behind runners and tucked the gelding in. Thereafter, he rode the horse as he found him till coming in to the straight and he got an opening along the rails and then he has ridden out.  He stated that he had come the shortest way home and has been close to RULE DOWNUNDER who was the danger in the field and he has also made his move at the same time when RULE DOWNUNDER made his move. To a further question, he stated that when RULE DOWNUNDER shifted out in the last 100 metres, his mount was also inclined to shift out at that stage, therefore, he changed his whip hand and used it a couple of times to correct the horse and then he put his whip down since he had already used it eight times and rode the horse out hands and heels. He added that at that stage, it appears that his mount was gaining ground, but that was not the case, rather when RULE DOWNUNDER shifted out and lost its momentum, it appeared that his mount had gained on RULE DOWNUNDER. To another question, he stated that he had not headed RULE DOWNUNDER at any stage in the straight.  To yet another question, Jockey A.Sandesh stated that if he had maintained his position from Draw-10 then he would have had to travel wide unnecessarily and the right thing to do was to check his mount and place him behind the runners.   When asked whether it was possible for him to place his mount on the outside of FRIBOURG near 1400 metres, the Jockey stated that in that case the horse would not have cover and it was possible that the horse may have run away with him.

The matter was reported to the Stewards.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 27th November, 2014 interviewed Jockey A.Sandesh, who was accompanied by his Spokesman, Mr.M.K.Jadhav. When asked to respond to the exception taken by Trainer Bezan Chenoy to his riding, Jockey A.Sandesh reiterated the statement he had made in the enquiry conducted by the Stipendiary Stewards. He said that he had done his best.

The Stewards having reviewed the race and having deliberated the matter, decided to exonerate the Jockey with regard to his riding on CONGRESSIONAL. However, Jockey A.Sandesh was told that should any fresh evidence be forthcoming, the Stewards may re-open the enquiry and take such action in the matter as they deem fit.

Further, the Stewards were directed to initiate a separate enquiry into the incident in the passage whilst the horses were returning to the paddock after the above race and report the matter to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit.
