RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE AS ALSO THE WHIP LOSS INCIDENT ON “GOVERNOR GENERAL” (DRAWN 4) IN RACE NO.32 - THE HELM INDIA TROPHY (1200 METRES) - RUN ON 4th DECEMBER, 2016 :

Trainer M. K. Jadhav was questioned in the above connection. He stated that Jockey A. Sandesh had ridden this horse earlier and won a race on him, as such, he had instructed the Jockey to ride his own race but not to go to the front since the gelding was running after a long gap. When asked about his observation of the race. Trainer M. K. Jadhav said that the gelding has always been keen and performs best when ridden under cover. As for the race in question, considering that he was racing after a period of 9 to 10  months,  the horse was very keen and he would have liked him to be settled a bit more. To another question, he said that while the gelding was being prepared to race during the Pune Meeting, he had a fall on his way back to the stables and subsequently lost condition. Due to this he had eased the horse off completely and gave him time to recuperate. To another question, he said that the gelding had worked well. On being asked about his views on the whip drop in the straight, Trainer M. K. Jadhav opined that the whip had got entangled in the reins while the Jockey was changing his grip from the back hand position to the fore hand. On being pointed out that the gelding was a favorite and the whip fell at a crucial part of the race, he felt that the gelding was a tired horse in the last 50 metres.

When questioned, Jockey A. Sandesh said that once he got into the horse he had given him a couple of back handers and when he tried to change his grip from the back hand to the fore hand position, the whip had slipped out of his hand. He added that even before the whip had slipped from his hand, there was a gap which he had tried to take but the gelding had not quickened.

Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race as also the blow up of the incident of the whip fall in normal as well as slow motion and keeping in mind that the gelding was racing after a long gap, the explanation tendered by Trainer M. K. Jadhav was considered. However, as the whip was lost at a very crucial stage of the race and the horse was a favourite, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 25th December, 2016 considered the above report and having heard Trainer M. K. Jadhav and Jockey A. Sandesh and having viewed the video of the race as also the blow up of the incident of whip fall in normal as well as slow motion, decided to give Jockey A. Sandesh the benefit of the doubt,

RE : ENQUIRY RE-OPENED INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “DIWALI LIGHTS (VIKRAM JODHA) IN RACE NO.27 - THE FREE RADICAL PLATE (DIV.II) RUN ON 1st DECEMBER, 2016 AFTER THE HORSE WON IN RACE NO.52 – THE SNOW DEW PLATE , RUN ON 15th DECEMBER, 2016 :

The Stipendiary reported that an enquiry was opened into the running and riding of DIWALI LIGHTS in race No. 27 run on 1st December 2016 where the gelding ran unplaced. During the said enquiry Trainer H. J. Antia had stated that DIWALI LIGHTS was a 5-year-old horse and was still a maiden, his best run was in Race No.22 during the just concluded Pune Meeting where he came from behind to finish fourth. He had said that the horse was owned by him and he was trying his best to win a race with him. He said that the horse lacks early speed and has never been able to hit the front even though he did instruct Jockeys in the past to hit the front. Therefore, in race no. 27 he had instructed Jockey Vikram Jodha to take a jump and settle the horse and coming into the straight to do his best. He also said that he was planning to race next over 1400 metres.

Considering that DIWALI LIGHTS was a 5-year old horse who was still a maiden and was at longer odds no action was initiated against Trainer H. J. Antia. However, he was told that the enquiry was being kept open and a close watch will be kept on the future running of this horse.

After having given due weightage to the fact that DIWALI LIGHTS subsequently won in Race No.52 in a lower Class reserved for horses 5 years old and upwards and also the distance was 200 extra this time, however, it is noted that the gelding had shown an improvement in 14 days time. Also, in the previous race the horse was ridden by Jockey Vikram Jodha and was at longer odds but in Race No.52 he was ridden by Jockey S. Zervan and won well fancied.

In view of the above, the matter is being reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 25th December, 2016 interviewed Trainer H. J. Antia in the above connection and having heard him and having viewed the video of both the races decided to adjourn the hearing to a later date since Jockey Vikram Jodha was not available for questioning.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “SKY MINE” IN RACE NO.11 - THE MAHARAJA SIR PRATAPSINGH GAEKWAD TROPHY (1400 METRES) - RUN ON 24th NOVEMBER, 2016 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait in connection with the captioned matter. He said that this filly likes to be ridden from the front, therefore, he had instructed Jockey P. Trevor to go to the front and ride his own race since he had won on her. To a specific question, he said that at face value, the filly did run a disappointing race, however, if one compares her last run in Pune in Race No.192 which she won, the horse that ran third in that race, viz. COMIC TIMING who finished about 1 length behind her, was unable to place in Class IV in his subsequent run. When asked about his observation of the race, he felt that the pace was slow in the initial part of the race which may have not suited the filly. The other reason could be that she had raced in five days of her travel from Pune.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video of the race the explanation tendered by Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait was noted.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “LADY COACHMAN” IN RACE NO. 58 – THE DHUN P KOTHAVALA TROPHY RUN ON 15th DECEMBER, 2016 VIS-À-VIS RACE NO. 191 – THE ARABIAN ROSE PLATE RUN ON 21st OCTOBER, 2016

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A. Abbas in the above connection. He stated that his instructions to App. G. Amit were to hit the front or to sit as well up as possible. Further he added that he had fancied the filly however the only thing that worried him was the large field and the outside draw. When asked about his observation of the race he stated that in his opinion the race was lost at the very start where the filly was knocked out badly. Thereafter, the filly further received interference just before and after the bend, which, in a sprint race, was too much to overcome. It was brought to Trainer Faisal A.Abbas’ attention that the interference at the bend was caused by the rider himself. Trainer Faisal A. Abbas accepted the same and added that he blames the running and luck of the race for the poor performance of his filly.

Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video of the race, the explanation tendered by Trainer Faisal A. Abbas was noted.
