Further he has been severely cautioned for future.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “IN MY DREAM” IN RACE NO.176-THE KUNIGAL STUD BREEDERS’ PRODUCE STAKES (GR.3), RUN ON SATURDAY 6th FEBRUARY  2016.

Soon after the running of the race Tr. C. D. Katrak had expressed his dissatisfaction with the riding of Jockey S. Zervan on his charge, IN MY DREAM, however, since the Jockey was not available due to previous engagements, his submissions were noted.

Trainer C. D. Katrak and Jockey S. Zervan were subsequently questioned in the above connection. Trainer C. D. Katrak stated that his instructions were very clear, i.e. to take a good jump and get into the filly to get her galloping and sit in a good position, not to allow her to drop position. He added that he along with Jockey Colm O’Donoghue (the retained Jockey of the owner), had specifically told Jockey S. Zervan to jump and get into the filly for the first few strides to get her galloping and then sit against her   and  not to jump and just sit. He said that again in the paddock, he gave the same instructions to the Jockey in the presence of the owner and had pointed out that his filly’s forte is stamina and not turn of foot. To a specific question, he stated that after the race Jockey S. Zervan reported that the filly was not galloping fluently with horses on her outside. However, on viewing the video recording of the race subsequently, it was nowhere evident that the filly had backed out when she had horses on her outside and on the contrary the Jockey was just sitting and made no attempt to keep his position. The only time he made an attempt to get into position was after he had dropped out of the race. The replay of the race in question was viewed and the Trainer reiterated his views. He further added that he was not implying that the Jockey had any mala-fide intent but had ridden a very incompetent/really bad race.

The previous run of the filly i.e. Race No.138 was viewed and the Trainer again stated that he was not implying that the Jockey had intent to lose the race but he rode a very incompetent race and he had lost a certain race.

Jockey S.Zervan was questioned in the presence of Trainer C.D.Katrak  and he stated that his instructions were to sit well up and to do his best. He said that that the filly jumped out nicely and got into her stride and was well up initially

but the minute the other horses came up on her outside, she started dropping back. He also stated that two furlongs from the start, he was off the bridle and in his opinion the filly was not galloping when she had horses on her outside. The Jockey pointed out that coming around the bend the filly was tentative and had brushed the rails and was not willing to get into the field. Thereafter, coming into the straight, he had pulled the filly out and that is when she started galloping.

It was pointed out to Jockey S. Zervan that his instructions were very clear and there was no ambiguity, which he confirmed. Thereafter, it was pointed out to the Jockey that the filly took a good start and he could have been well up as instructed, however, he had dropped back to last position and his reasoning that the filly was not galloping due to horses on her outside was not evident on the video recording and the same is not substantiated by her previous run wherein the filly had not behaved in a manner as claimed by him. Also, his efforts to maintain his position were not visible. Jockey S. Zervan stated that the filly was dropping when she had horses on the outside and he was compromised for space. To a another query, the Jockey stated that if he would have shifted out and positioned the filly on the outside, then he would have had to travel extra ground, therefore, he had settled her on the inside. At this juncture, Trainer C. D. Katrak  pointed out that turning for home the Jockey had elected to make his run on the inside and thereafter he shifted out at an angle and there was no reason to do that, instead, he should have started to move out before the turn and that would have placed him and the filly at an advantage. Further, the Jockey should not have dropped out after the start and should have held his position and in his opinion the Jockey had ridden an incompetent race.

After hearing the submissions made by the Trainer and Jockey, keeping in mind that the Jockey had not followed his riding instruction and the Trainer had expressed his dissatisfaction with his riding efforts, Jockey S. Zervan was reported to the stewards for not following instructions and thereby not giving the horse the best chance in the race and riding an unsatisfactory race on a favourite.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Thursday, 25th February, 2016 interviewed Trainer C. D. Katrak and Jockey S. Zervan and having heard them and having viewed the video of the race in question as also its previous run, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey S. Zervan and held him guilty of not following his instructions and thereby not giving his mount the best chance in the race and riding an unsatisfactory race on a favourite. In that, he was specifically instructed to jump out and get into the filly for the first few strides to get her galloping and not to lose position. However, despite the filly taking a good jump and being in a good position, thereafter he made no attempt to hold on to his position and dropped back to the last position. The Trainer also expressed his dissatisfaction with the riding. The Stewards noted that Jockey S. Zervan was suspended in the past for similar offences of unsatisfactory riding. However, keeping in mind that he admitted his mistake that he should have made more efforts to hold on to his position in the first furlong and apologized for the same, the Stewards took a lenient view and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 12th March, 2016 to 26th March, 2016 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race). Further, he was severely cautioned for the future.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “LHOTSE” IN RACE NO.203-THE NATIONAL SPORTS CLUB OF INDIA TROPHY (DIV-I),  RUN ON SATURDAY 20th FEBRUARY  2016 :

Trainer Sangramsinh N. Joshi and Jockey S. G. Prasad were questioned in the above connection. Trainer Sangramsinh N. Joshi stated that he had instructed the Jockey to sit  in 4th/5th position and to do his best. Jockey S. G. Prasad confirmed the instructions and added that soon after the start he was sitting in 5th/ 6th position as instructed, however, approaching the 800 metres he got covered by the field on his outside and had to drop back since there was no room to hold position and as such he was unable to follow his riding instructions. To a specific question, the Trainer stated that he had accepted the Jockey’s explanation as the field was bunched up.  The video of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Jockey S. G. Prasad that he had sufficient room to hold his position, however, Jockey S. G. Prasad stated that soon after the start he received an interference and hence he could not hold position. On reviewing the video, the Jockey’s contention could not be established.

Having viewed the video of the race, Tr. Sangramsinh N. Joshi stated that the Jockey had not followed the instructions, in that, although he has pushed the horse for first few strides to get into position, however, thereafter he had not made an effort to hold on to his position and dropped back. Jockey S. G. Prasad stated that coming into the straight there was no opening on the inside therefore he elected to make his run from the outside but ARMANDO (Dashrath Singh) drifted out on to ADRENO (I. Pasha) who stopped riding and as a result of this he was tightened for room for a few strides and had to stop riding. Thereafter, as soon as the gap opened up he had shifted in and rode out.

After hearing the submissions made by the Trainer and Jockey, it was pointed out to the Trainer that in case he was not satisfied with the ridding or in case the Jockey has not followed his instructions he should report the matter to the Stipendiary Stewards, however, in this particular case he was given the benefit of doubt and not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey S. G. Prasad, his Jockey’s license was suspended w.e.f. 12th March, 2016 to 20th March, 2016 (both days inclusive) for not following his instructions and riding an unsatisfactory race (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “WINGS OF GLORY” IN RACE NO.204-THE BOMBAY GYMKHANA TROPHY (DIV-I), RUN ON SATURDAY 20th FEBRUARY  2016.

Trainer Mansoor Shah and Jockey Dashrath Singh were questioned in the above connection. Trainer Mansoor Shah stated that this was the first run of WINGS OF GLORY under his charge and the gelding had shown speed during gate practice, hence he had instructed the Jockey to take a quick jump and go to the front or else to sit in 2nd/3rd position and to do his best in the straight. He said that WINGS OF GLORY is a 7 year old, nevertheless he had expected him to hit the front as he had done in his previous outing in a 7 furlong race. At the same time, he also pointed that in morning work, the gelding does not pick up canter easily hence he mostly worked him on the tread mill and swimming. Jockey Dashrath Singh confirmed the instructions.

To a specific question, the Trainer stated he had fancied his charge and he was a little disappointed that the gelding did not take a forward position. He said that the gelding was a little lethargic after the start and he expected the Jockey to improve his position. He said that after the race the Jockey reported to him that the gelding was not responding and being an older horse, he did not want to blame the Jockey but still felt that he could have put in more efforts. The video of the race was viewed and on being questioned, the Trainer stated that when he first saw the race he felt that since the gelding was not in the forward position his chances of winning were less and as the race progressed it kept diminishing. To another question, the Trainer said that he could not get in touch with the owner as he was on a flight.

The video recording of the previous run of WINGS OF GLORY i.e. Race No 91 was viewed.

On being questioned, Jockey Dashrath Singh stated soon after the start he had got into the gelding but soon thereafter he was covered by horses on his outside and when BROWN DYNAMITE, ridden by P. Trevor came alongside, he decided to settle his mount alongside BROWN DYNAMITE. He said that he had ridden the gelding once during the last Mumbai Season, however, he has not ridden him during work. When asked whether he should have put in more effort to hold his position, Jockey Dashrath Singh pointed out that the horses on his outside were moving faster and he had no room to go and as mentioned earlier, when he saw BROWN DYNAMITE (P. Trevor) travelling alongside, he sat along with him. Further, considering that he is an older horse, he felt that he would travel better once he gets into his stride so he did not hurry.  It was pointed out to the Jockey that he should have maintained his position in the early part, to which he again stated that his mount did not show speed and further, if he had tried to hold on to his position, he may have clipped the front runners as he was on their haunches, so he settled him since there were horses on his outside and he had nowhere to go. Further, the gelding was moving better when supported so he had collected him and rode out.

When specifically asked whether he was satisfied with the riding efforts of Jockey Dashrath Singh, Trainer Mansoor shah reiterated that the Jockey could have put in more efforts and had pointed the same to the Jockey, however, considering the calibre of the Jockey, he did not wish to blame him and would give him the benefit of doubt.

After hearing the submissions made and viewing the video of the race, Trainer Mansoor Shah was informed that the enquiry was being kept open and a close watch would be kept on the future running of this horse, especially its running pattern.
