RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “BONNY LIGHT” IN RACE NO.9 – THE NYAYO PLATE (DIV.II) (1200 METRES) RUN ON THURSDAY, 17TH NOVEMBER, 2011 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A.Abbas and Jockey C.Rajendra in the above connection. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that he had instructed the Jockey to go to the front if possible or else sit well up and to ride his own race from there.
The video recording of the race was viewed and Trainer Faisal Abbas was asked for his observation. He stated that the horse was not able to go to the front and the Jockey had ridden him out but the horse fizzled out in the final furlong or so. He added that BONNY LIGHT was an 8-year-old horse and even in Pune he ran well when he got a chance to hit the front and set his own pace. He said that the initial pace in this race over 1200 metres may have been too quick for his horse and this could be due to his late arrival in Mumbai. He said that he had worked the horse in Pune before coming to Mumbai and the horse had worked well but after coming to Mumbai the horse was only on trot before running in this race. When questioned regarding the drift in the odds on this horse, Tr.Faisal Abbas stated that he had fancied the horse and he had no idea why the odds drifted. He said that he has won races in the past despite drift in odds. He said that he had raced the horse over 1200 metres since the field was weak and he could earn some stake money.
Jockey C.Rajendra confirmed the instructions and added that he had even used the whip after the start to make the horse keen but the horse did not respond, nor did he respond in the straight.
The explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “BLAU HIMMEL” IN RACE NO.10 – THE NYAYO PLATE (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RUN ON THURSDAY, 17TH NOVEMBER, 2011 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey C.Rajendra in the above connection. Trainer Dallas Todywalla said that he had instructed the Jockey to take a nice jump, make his position and to do his best.
The video recording of the race was viewed and Trainer Dallas Todywalla was asked for his observation. He said that the only explanation he had regarding the horse’s performance in this race was that all top weight horses have not really galloped efficiently on this track this week. He added that the horse had arrived in Mumbai only on the 11th of this month and had not worked in Mumbai and his general practice was that he doesn’t work horses too close to the race and prefers to keep them fresh. He added that the horse was a 6-year-old and he was for sale but hopefully he would run him again on 24th November, 2011 in a 1400 metres race for horses 5-years old since there is no other similar race until next year when 4-years old horses would get the advantage since they would turn 5 and his horse would turn 7 years. He opined that the horse had not run poorly because on the same handicap, he had run 4th/5th throughout the season in Pune. He said that he had fancied the horse and he had no explanation to the drift in odds.
Jockey C.Rajendra confirmed the instructions and stated that in the final furlong the horse was lugging in despite his efforts.
When questioned, Trainer Dallas Todywalla said that the horse was sound but he has always tried to take the support of the rails even in the past. He said that he had the horse checked and he was absolutely sound.
The explanation was noted.
RE “ ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SHERMAN FLAIL” IN RACE NO.213 – THE SELF STYLED PLATE (DIV.II) RUN ON SUNDAY, 16TH OCTOBER, 2011 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Narendra Lagad and Jockey Akash Agarwal in the above connection. Trainer Narendra Lagad said that he had instructed the Jockey to be well up and ride out. Jockey Akash Agarwal confirmed the instructions and said that he had done his best.
The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Jockey Akash Agarwal that he had not made sufficient effort to sit well up as instructed and thereafter had travelled wide and raced on the Main Track. Trainer Narendra Lagad said that he had specifically told the Jockey not to go on the Main Track.
Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Akash Agarwal, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.
The Stewards at their meeting held on Thursday, 24th November, 2011 interviewed Trainer Narendra Lagad and Jockey Akash Agarwal who was accompanied by his Spokesman, Mr.J.E.Pereira, and having heard the submissions made by them and viewing the video recording of the race, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Akash Agarwal. The Stewards noted that he had not made sufficient efforts to be well up as instructed and also travelled very wide despite being specifically told by the Trainer not to do so. However, considering that the horse had no past form, the Stewards decided to give Jockey Akash Agarwal the benefit of the doubt in the subject case and he was warned that on repetition of such riding in the future, very severe action would be initiated against him.
